TARBORO —
Bus routes and student safety were topics brought to the attention of the Edgecombe County Board of Education in the public comment portion of Monday’s board meeting.
Danny Simmons, grandfather of Janell Simmons, the first grader at G.W. Bulluck Elementary School who was struck by a vehicle and killed while waiting for her school bus the morning of Aug. 30, was the first to address the board.
Simmons wanted to set the record straight about what happened and let everyone know that the place where his grandchildren wait for the bus in front of his home on N.C. Highway 43 is not a safe location. Simmons explained that he lives on a hill, which increases motorists’ tendency to speed and impedes the ability for motorists to see school buses stop ahead of time.
“On many occasions, we have been sitting in our home and when the buses do stop, we hear brakes lock up on cars,” said Simmons. “They hit the brakes because all of a sudden the bus is sitting there. Any cars behind the bus will back up on the hill.”
Simmons went on to say that he thinks there should be “some kind of signs or something there to warn the traffic that this is a school bus stop.”
Simmons’ grandchildren still ride the bus to school every day, despite having to walk right past the spot where their sister was killed.
“They got right back on the bus,” said Simmons. “They’re brave. They have a good foundation in the Lord.”
Angela Lyons also addressed the board at Monday’s meeting about a concern with her daughter’s bus route. Lyons’ daughter is a student at Coker-Wimbley Elementary School. Lyons said the school bus is letting off her daughter at 113 Walter Drive, which requires her to walk all the way down the road to get home. She told the board she worries that her daughter might get hit by a car and that there are “too many strange people walking that highway.”
“I want my child to be safe, to be put off at … her grandmother’s house,” said Lyons.
Lauren Edmondson, communications and community relations director for Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS), said parents requesting a change in their child’s bus route must submit a form requesting that change, to be reviewed by David Coker, the school system’s director of transportation. The form can be found on ECPS’ web site http://www.ecps.us. To find the form, click on the tab “departments,” then go to “operational services” and click on “transportation.” The school system’s first priority is the safety of students, Edmondson said.

You, too, can be a slacker spy
Think you're a loser just because you dropped out of high school and never finished the military training you began?
Think you're a dud just because you work as a security guard even though you dreamed of becoming a global savior?
Well, don't beat yourself up. You, too, can become an international superspy like Edward Snowden.

Elegant Entertaining With Bold Flavors
Summer entertaining is easy with simple, crowd-pleasing recipes from light bites to sweet delights that require almost no time in the kitchen.
Invite over a few of your closest friends, heat up the grill and set out your favorite wines for a truly memorable outdoor dinner party. Select simple recipes that can be prepared ahead of time and quickly seared on the grill once your guests have arrived. Everyone will enjoy the food and you'll love that you're not trapped in the kitchen. Prep, chop and marinate everything then store it all in containers.
Continue the trend of simplicity by serving food-friendly wines, such as those from Las Rocas. Las Rocas, which literally means "the rocks" because of the rocky soil where the grapes are grown, produces an incredibly vibrant Garnacha and refreshing RosÈ that pair wonderfully with these dishes. - Zesty Mexican Meals Made Fast
