TARBORO —
As the school year winds to a close, area seniors and their families are getting ready for the always joyous graduation season.
"The expectations for high school graduates are greater than they've ever been," said Edgecombe County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Stephen Mazingo. "They should be especially proud of that."
More than 400 high school seniors are expected to graduate this year.
Mazingo added that being prepared for the next chapter in their life may require more than a high school diploma.
"A high school diploma is not always enough to guarantee a good job in today's economy," he said. "I encourage graduates to take their diploma from here and pursue further education, either at Edgecombe Community College or at another college or unversity."
The Edgecombe Early College High School with hold its commencement ceremonies at 7 p.m. on May 25 in Keihin Auditorium on the campus of Edgecombe Community College and North Edgecombe High will use the same venue at the same time on June 10 for its graduation ceremonies.
SouthWest Edgecombe High will have its graduation at 8 p.m. on June 11 in Cougar Stadium and the Vikings of Tarboro High will walk across the stage at 10 a.m. on June 12 in the Viking Stadium.
If rain dampers the day at SouthWest or Tarboro High, the ceremonies will be moved into the respective gymnasiums at each school and tickets will be needed for admission.
In between graduations and the end of the school year, there will be senior awards and baccalaureates to attend.
North Edgecombe had their senior awards ceremony and picnic this morning at 9 a.m. and SouthWest will have its baccalaureate at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
SouthWest Edgecombe will give out senior awards at 7 p.m. on May 27 and Tarboro High will give out its awards at 7 p.m. on June 10.
North Edgecombe will have its Baccalaureate at 5 p.m. on June 6 with Tarboro High having there's an hour prior on the same day.
There are some tips for graduates on how to make the most of this memorable event and for those attending.
Graduates, be sure to:
• wear comfortable shoes since you don't know how long you will be standing,
• make sure all needed clothing is ready to go the day before including pantyhose, socks, etc.,
• try to be as well-rested as possible,
• to those giving speeches, keep them interesting, to those listening, pay attention, don't text;
• and express your gratitude to those who helped you along the way.
Those attending graduation:
• get to the graduation site early,
• be prepared for the weather, insect repellant, sunscreen, hats, water, etc.,
• try to dress as comfortable as possible,

HAPPENING ON THE COMMON
Tarboro’s Town Common was clearly the center of activity in town Saturday, with cars lining the streets surrounding the common, music that could be heard from blocks away, and a sea of people navigating their way through the vendors’ tables under a canopy of trees. The occasion was the 43rd Annual Happening on the Common.

Pinetops 300
PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.

My 13 years have been lucky
It was 13 years Sunday that a drought was broken in Big Spring, Texas, After that, we ate Mexican for dinner with a gathering of family and friends.
The next day, a Saturday, Stephanie and I joined one another in marriage under a beautiful little gazebo by Comanche Trail Lake, fed by the historic spring from which the community draws its name.
