Local Salvation Army launches school supply drive

TARBORO — The new school year will begin soon. For parents, that means it’s time to start thinking about back-to-school shopping. For some parents, however, school supplies simply are not in their household budget.

“It’s really tough out there for parents,” said Regina Parsons, office manager at The Salvation Army of Rocky Mount, which serves both Edgecombe and Nash counties. That’s why the Salvation Army has a school supplies donation drive ± Apple Tree — every year to take the burden off low-income parents of school-age children.

Parsons estimated that the cost of buying school supplies is at least $30-$40 per child, depending on the child’s grade level. When a parent is forced to decide between putting food on the table and buying their child (children) a book bag, the choice is simple.

“You can’t eat a book bag, so you would feed your kids first,” said Parsons. She said The Salvation Army has seen more need in the community than usual this year because of the stagnant economy. (Many community members are working low-wage jobs, not receiving enough work hours and not receiving annual pay increases.) Parsons estimated that the Salvation Army donated school supplies to 174 children in last year’s drive. This year, she expects that number to reach 200. The goal is to equip students for success.

“You can’t be successful if you don’t have the supplies you need,” said Parsons.

The Salvation Army of Rocky Mount will take donations of school supplies for students in kindergarten through grade 12. The deadline for donations is July 31. If you are interested in making a donation, contact Capt. Cristina Trantham by phone at 446-4496, ext. 206. or via e-mail at  HYPERLINK "mailto:Cristina_Trantham@uss.salvationarmy.org" Cristina_Trantham@uss.salvationarmy.org.

The Salvation Army is taking applications for recipients of school supplies from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. July 16-19. The Salvation Army Corps is located at 420 Paul Street in Rocky Mount.

The following is a list of suggested school supplies for donation: three-ring binders, book bags, wide-ruled and college-ruled loose spiral notebooks, loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, crayons, magic markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, highlighters, index cards, construction paper, children’s scissors, rulers, protractors, pocket folders, and travel-size tissues.

  • fondue-setup.jpg Great fondue

My husband and I love to entertain. We also love fondue. I have 4 or 5 fondue pots. I use them regularly. Some of them I have had for a long time.
Fondue began as a way to use up old, hardened cheese. The original fondue was cheese with wine. You then dipped hardened pieces of bread into the mixture. In America, the 1950's was the height of the fondue craze. However, it appears to be making a comeback.

In regards to Benghazi, the IRS revelations, the seizing of phone records and the recently disclosed use of drones to kill four Americans, how transparent has the Administration been?

Somewhat, once they've been cornered/caught
They can't spell transparent
It's George Bush's fault!
