Passenger cut out of single-car accident

TARBORO — A one-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 64 near Exit 496 Thursday afternoon resulted in one person being transported to Vidant Medical Center and the other walking away from the crash.

At about 2:30 p.m., Edgecombe County dispatchers called for all available emergency personnel to respond to the westbound lane of U.S. 64 near the 496 mile marker to help remove an injured passenger who was pinned inside a late model Nissan Sentra.

Thirty-year-old Jennifer Simmons, of Burlington, was driving in the eastbound lane when she lost control of the vehicle. The car crashed through the steel guardrails in the median, went through the median, hit the westbound lane and flipped. The car came to rest on the westbound side, blocking both lanes.

"I went to change lanes and lost control," she said. "I don't really remember what happened after I hit the guard rail and began to flip. It was really scary."

When emergency workers arrived on the scene, they found Simmons' boyfriend, 30-year-old David Lee, also of Burlington, pinned inside the vehicle on the passenger's side.

Emergency workers used the Jaws of Life to cut the roof and passenger's door off the vehicle to allow them room to remove Lee. After he was removed and stabilized, personnel moved Lee down the westbound lane for transfer to an East Care air ambulance for transport to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Thursday's wreck just added to Simmons' miseries, as she and her boyfriend were on the way to a funeral.

"We were headed to my grandmother's funeral in Washington," Simmons said. "David was supposed to sing a Latin song at the funeral that my grandmother really liked to listen to. This just hurts really bad to know this has happened at a time like this."

More than 30 emergency personnel, including state highway patrol, sheriff's department, EMS and volunteer personnel from both Conetoe and Bethel reponded.

Lee was listed in fair condition at 5 p.m.

Two suspects arrested on 36 charges; third issued citation
After executing a search warrant Thursday on a residence at 500 W. Johnston St. in Tarboro, police officers arrested two suspects for possessing a small amount of marijuana and issued a third suspect a citation for possessing a glass pipe to smoke the drugs.
After the marijuana was found, officers notified two of the three suspects that they also had additional warrants on them from the department's "Spring Fling" drug campaign where they had sold marijuana to undercover officers.

Pinetops 300
PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.

BELVOIR — Mrs. Mattie Ruth Bullock, 81, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013. The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson.
Mrs. Bullock, a native of Wilson County and a lifelong resident of Pitt County, was a graduate of Belvoir-Falkland High School. She was engaged in farming with her husband until 1989 and was a charter member of Belvoir Free Will Baptist Church.
