TARBORO —
While there are still 19 days left before the Nov. 6 General Election, early voting gets under way today across North Carolina’s 100 counties.
Early (One Stop) voting will be held at:
• Edgecombe County Administrative Building/Auditorium at 201 St. Andrew Street in Tarboro
• Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education Administrative Building at 800 N. Fairview Road in Rocky Mount
• Edgecombe County Memorial Library (Pinetops Branch) 201 S. First St. Pinetops
• The M C Braswell Cultural and Educational Development Center, 649 Morning Star Church Road.
One Stop sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
While the deadline to register to vote was last Friday, persons who are not registered — and are qualified — may do so at one of the early voting locations by filling out a voting registration application and provide proof of residency by showing the elections official an accepted form of identification with the prospective voters current name and current address.
Voters will find a total of 15 contested races — including either the District 1 Congressional race or the District 13 Congressional race.
A portion of western Edgecombe County was carved out during redistricting to redraw the lines of the 13th district, which is being contested by Democrat Charles Malone and Republican George Holding.
The redrawn district excludes Rocky Mount but does include that portion of Tarboro north of Howard Avenue and west of Main Street. It also includes Pinetops, Macclesfield, Sharpsburg and much of the southwestern portion of the county.
The remaining residents of the county are in District 1 and will choose between incumbent G. K. Butterfield (D) or challengers Pete DiLauro (R) or Darryl Holloman (L).
All other ballots in the county are the same and, in addition to voting for individual candidates, include a straight party option for Democrat, Republican or Libertarian.
There is also a quarter-cent sales tax on the ballot, which must be voted on individually on all ballots. The tax will benefit Edgecombe Community College and will help fund a biotechnology and simulation center on the Rocky Mount campus and a workforce training center on the Tarboro campus.
In recent years, One Stop voting has become popular. In the 2008 General Election, 19,000 out of the 29,000 registered voters in Edgecombe County voted at a One Stop site.
