TARBORO —
“And the winner of the title of 2013-2014 Distinguished Young Woman of Edgecombe County is … Katie King.” Janie Leland, 2012-2013 Distinguished Young Woman, passed her title to King along with a congratulatory hug.
King was one of the 13 high school juniors who vied for the title Saturday night in a “sweet, sassy, southern and classy” competition in front of a near capacity audience and a panel of judges at Edgecombe Community College’s Keihin Auditorium.
“I was definitely overwhelmed and surprised,” said King, of the moment when the announcers proclaimed her the winner. She said she feels “very honored” to hold the title.
“It’s kind of humbling that I can be a role model now,” the Tarboro High student said.
For her talent competition, accounting for 25 percent of the overall score, King played a piece on the guitar called “Guitar Boogie” that had audience members clapping their hands to the beat of the music.
“She taught herself to play the guitar,” said King’s mother, Kimberly. “Her twin sisters Maggie and Morgan helped her pick out a piece. She practiced every day. She’s very self-disciplined.”
King had the highest scholastic achievement out of the 13 young women in the competition, which accounted for 20 percent of the overall score.
“I’m very proud of her. She put in so much work (for the competition) and scholastically she always does,” said King’s father, Jimmie. “She’s very self-motivated.”
King also competed in the category of fitness Saturday night, to the song “Southern Belles.” That category accounts for 15 percent of the judges’ score, and the judges look for “agility, coordination, strength and body tone” of contestants. King’s sister, Morgan, who competed in DYW a couple of years ago, helped her with that part of the competition, regularly asking her, “Have you done your stretches?”
For the self-expression portion of the competition, accounting for 15 percent of the judges’ score, King had to select an outfit expressing her personal style, walk gracefully around the stage and respond to the question, “Why do you like calling Carolina home?”
Morgan said seeing her sister on stage looking beautiful and beaming with self-confidence almost made her cry.
“I’ve seen her completely change,” she said, adding that her sister is “not a girly-girl.” “This whole thing (competition) really gives girls confidence.”
“She stepped outside of her box,” said Kimberly.
“She’s always been a distinguished young woman to me,” said King’s proud grandmother, Phyllis Talbot.
The final category of Saturday’s competition was an interview with the judges, conducted earlier in the day. As DYW, King received a $1,500 academic scholarship, a silver bowl and a state competition clothing award, among other prizes. She will represent Edgecombe County in the statewide competition in Greensboro next February.
First runner-up was Haley Lewis, daughter of Dana and Tony Parisher and a student at Tarboro High. Lewis performed a contemporary dance to the song “Wild Horses.” Lewis’ prize was a $1,000 academic scholarship, silver bowl and trip to the state DYW competition.
Second runner up was Rebecca Riggs, daughter of Rae and Aaron Riggs and a student at Edgecombe Early College High School. Riggs showed off her skills in karate-ka and won an $800 academic scholarship and a silver bowl.
Quarshunda Smith, a student at Edgecombe Early College High School, was selected by her fellow competitors as recipient of the spirit award and a $100 scholarship. Tangie Staton, also a student at the Early College, received the Be Your Best Self Award, a silver bowl and a $100 scholarship.
