Civil War sesquicentennial photo exhibit coming to library

TARBORO — As the nation observes the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the opportunity for local residents and visitors to take a look back in history arrives Tuesday at the Edgecombe County Public Library through a special photo exhibit.

"Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory: Civil War Sesquicentennial Photography Exhibit" (http://www.nccivilwar150.com) a 24-image exhibit, will visit the library from Tuesday through Sunday, July 29.

The war, fought from 1861-1865, savaged lives yet secured the future of generations in North Carolina and the rest of the nation. The injustices faced by blacks were some of the most significant factors leading to the fight for liberation is just one of many moving features of the exhibit.

"The Civil War was the first war widely covered with photography," explained Deputy Secretary Dr. Jeffrey Crow of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.  "The Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory exhibit provides images of historic figures, artifacts, and documents that brought the reality of the war from the battlefront to the home front, then and now."

The exhibit will commemorate the bravery and resiliency of North Carolinians throughout the war with images gathered from the state archives, the North Carolina Museum of History and state historic sites.

The exhibit has been moving from library to library since April 2011 and, by the time it concludes next May, will have been shown in 50 libraries.

The collection depicts blacks, women and militiamen and includes images of artifacts and official documents. One picture depicts a Union soldier in the U.S. Colored Troops (U.S.C.T.), which had control of the area around Wilson and Wayne counties after the war. More than 5,000 North Carolina blacks are documented as having served in the U.S.C.T. for the Union Army and Navy. Despite resentment from Confederates, blacks dutifully served, paving their way to freedom.

They enjoy working hard during practice for their coach Rickie Dozier and get fulfillment when they compete in events. Friday will be no different for the six girls that are headed to Greensboro to compete in the NCHSAA 2-A state championship meet at North Carolina A&T State University. They will compete in three relay events and the long jump.
