TARBORO —
Tarboro Police have arrested one person in connection with a July 28 shooting at the National Guard Armory that left two people wounded.
Joeshawn Kaywhen Cherry, 17, of 325 Casey Lane, Rocky Mount, turned himself in after he learned a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
Cherry, who is being held in the Edgecombe County Detention Center on a $60,000 secured bond, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon in the city limits, going armed to terror of the public and pattern gang activity.
The shootings happened while more than 100 people gathered at the armory to raise money for the purchase of a headstone for a teenager who lost his life in a car accident earlier this year.
According to police, more than 30 shell casings from four different types of guns were found at the scene. Additionally, officers found live rounds inside the building.
Thomas Mitchell, 19, of Winterville was hit in the shoulder and Patrick Ry'Shawn Knight Garvin, 17, of Princeville, was hit in the left leg. The bullet that hit Garvin's leg shattered his left femur. As a result, Garvin had to undergo surgery to have a rod implanted to stabilize the bone.
During the investigation, Det. Sgt. Bruce Edwards notified the Greenvile and Rocky Mount police about the incident and asked for their assistance.
Edwards later received a call from an officer in Greenville who notified him about Dion Lashawn Grimes, 20, of Winterville. Grimes had run from a vehicle that had run out of gas and attempted to throw a backpack into the Tar River. Police found a 9mm handgun in the backpack and charged Grimes with carrying a concealed weapon.
On Monday night, Police Chief Damon Williams gave members of the town council an update on the incident and a change in armory rental policy.
Prior to the shooting, armory policy said persons renting the facility were responsible for security — but on the night of the shooting, there was none present.
Williams said after meeting with armory officials, a policy has been implemented whereby an off-duty Tarboro policeman will work security and, in the event no security is present, the facility will be cleared and closed.
"If we would've had an officer working security, this incident would not had happened," Edwards said. "Simple things like this can stop crimes from happening in our community."
Edwards said the investigation is ongoing.

HAPPENING ON THE COMMON
Tarboro’s Town Common was clearly the center of activity in town Saturday, with cars lining the streets surrounding the common, music that could be heard from blocks away, and a sea of people navigating their way through the vendors’ tables under a canopy of trees. The occasion was the 43rd Annual Happening on the Common.

Pinetops 300
PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.

It was 13 years Sunday that a drought was broken in Big Spring, Texas, After that, we ate Mexican for dinner with a gathering of family and friends.
The next day, a Saturday, Stephanie and I joined one another in marriage under a beautiful little gazebo by Comanche Trail Lake, fed by the historic spring from which the community draws its name.
