TARBORO —
The names of 400 prospective students were drawn from a raffle cage Tuesday night as the first lottery for acceptance into North East Carolina Prep School was held at the Tarboro National Guard Armory. Mayor Donald Morris drew the names.
Dozens of parents and registered students were in attendance for the three drawing sessions in which names were randomly drawn from the cage.
"We continue to be amazed at the support from parents and the community,” said NECP executive director John Westberg. “As a school, it is our hope to respond with the same level of support and to provide parents the strong educational alternative they have been seeking for their children.”
Because the school only projected a first-year enrollment of 380 students in grades K-8, the lottery was made necessary. The students whose names were not drawn for acceptance were placed on a waiting list in the order in which their names were drawn.
Because of the success of enrollment, the NECP board of directors has motioned to expand the board, increasing the total number from five members to seven.
“Our charter allows for an expansion that we had projected would be done at some future date to coincide with the growth of the school,” said board vice-chair Brownie Eidson. “However, due to the overwhelming response from families wanting to enroll more than 400 children in this new public school, we felt it was important to move ahead now.”
Board chair Taro Knight added, “Enlarging the board will create a wider, stronger and more diverse base of support for NECP. It should be noted that the board has established term limits, creating a rotation that will encourage fresh ideas, leadership development, and broad ownership of this unique school.”
Community members may apply to fill the two positions by submitting a resume and reference letter. Applicants will be presented before a committee which will select the candidates to be voted on by the board. Interested individuals can email WestbergJD@necprepschool.com or mail to P.O. Box 8, Tarboro.
As the school year nears, NECP officials said the school has received over 900 applications for employment next fall. Teachers and staff who are interested in applying for available positions may do so at Teachers-teachers.com.
Parents who are interested in having their children attend NECP for the upcoming school year can still apply to be on the waiting list. Email contactus@necprepschool.com for more information.
North East Carolina Prep School is a tuition-free public charter school and will serve students in Edgecombe and surrounding counties. The school plans to begin classes for grades K-8 on Aug. 1. For more information, visit www.necprepschool.com or email contactus@necprepschool.com.

My 13 years have been lucky
It was 13 years Sunday that a drought was broken in Big Spring, Texas, After that, we ate Mexican for dinner with a gathering of family and friends.
The next day, a Saturday, Stephanie and I joined one another in marriage under a beautiful little gazebo by Comanche Trail Lake, fed by the historic spring from which the community draws its name.

Great fondue
My husband and I love to entertain. We also love fondue. I have 4 or 5 fondue pots. I use them regularly. Some of them I have had for a long time.
Fondue began as a way to use up old, hardened cheese. The original fondue was cheese with wine. You then dipped hardened pieces of bread into the mixture. In America, the 1950's was the height of the fondue craze. However, it appears to be making a comeback. - Budget Friendly Deliciousness
