Medford honored at 111th flag raising

TARBORO — Members of the National Guard are called America’s “citizen soldiers” and, on Monday, one was honored during the 111th Memorial Flag-raising Service at the Edgecombe County Veterans’ Memorial on the Town Common.

S/Sgt. Harvey K. Medford, who served in the Army National Guard as a member of the 119th Inf. A 1st Battalion was honored at the monthly ceremony, which is sponsored by Tarboro’s Golden K Kiwanis Club.

S/MSgt. Ellis M. Cullifer, retired, who was Medford’s brother-in-law, called him a God-fearing man and noted that he served his fellow Guardsmen as chaplain.

While never called to active duty, Cullifer pointed out that Medford and others like him all across the country provided the “first line of defense” for our nation.

Cullifer noted that it was often the Guard that was sent in ahead of the regular troops and, while Medford’s service was done locally, his value and that of other Guard members was no less valuable.

Medford, who worked at Glenoit and, later, with Perdue, served from March 7, 1960 until Sept. 1981.

The third of nine children, several of Medford’s siblings were on-hand for the ceremony.

“I don’t know why people always ask that question,” Cullifer said. “It doesn’t make any difference, but he was the third of nine.”

His daughters, Renee Proctor of Leggett and Amy Thornton of Rocky Mount, placed Medford’s memorial wreath. They were escorted during the presentation by his grandson, Josh Proctor, who was at the ceremony as a member of the Tarboro High School JROTC color guard. Also on-hand was granddaughter Erin Proctor and grandson Clark Thornton.

At the ceremony, the Colors were retired for Alvin Lee Letchworth, who served in the U.S. Army in Korea.

The next flag raising will be in honor of George Sisler Webb. Webb’s ceremony and Medford’s retirement will be on Monday, Sept. 4.
