2 teenagers shot; police find more than 30 casings

TARBORO — The Tarboro Police Department is asking for help from the community as it works to find out who is responsible for shooting two people at the National Guard Armory on West Walnut Street early Sunday morning.

The shooting took place around midnight as about 100 persons gathered in an attempt to raise money to purchase a headstone for the grave of Randy Higgs, a teenager killed in a car crash earlier this year.

Det. Sgt. Bruce Edwards said Patrick Ry'Shawn Knight Garvin, 17, of Princeville, had been shot in the leg and Thomas Mitchell, 19, of Winterville, had been shot in the shoulder.

According to Garvin's mother, Princeville commissioner Gwen Knight, he had successful surgery Sunday to repair the damage caused to his leg. Knight said the bullet shattered the femur in her son’s left leg and that a rod had to be put in place.

While there were no other victims, stray gunfire did hit several vehicles in the armory parking lot.

Edwards was called to the scene to try and determine what had taken place and to learn the identity of the shooters.

While conducting their investigation, officers found more than 30 shell casings from several different caliber weapons. They also found numerous live rounds inside the building where the party was being held.

Edwards learned the suspected shooters may have taken off and headed toward either Rocky Mount or Greenville and contacted both police departments to notify them of the incident.

After speaking with officers in Greenville, Edwards learned that they had arrested Dion Lashawn Grimes, 20, of Winterville, after he ran from a vehicle that had run out of gas.

Edwards said Greenville police told him that Grimes tried to throw a backpack he had in his possession in the river, but it landed on the bank, instead.

When officers found the backpack, they discovered there was a 9 mm handgun inside. They arrested Grimes and charged him with carrying a concealed weapon, then notified Edwards of their findings.

After being told about Grimes, Edwards went to Greenville and interviewed several people about the shooting.

According to Edwards, he is still working the incident to try and determine if Grimes was the alleged shooter, or if someone else was responsible.

According to several sources, when the armory building is rented, the persons renting it are responsible for hiring police for security purposes, but there was no security at the party.

"If we would've had an officer working security, this incident would not had happened," Edwards said. "Simple things like this can stop crimes from happening in our community."

"We need the public’s help to get the people responsible for this crime," Edwards said. "With all the people at the party, someone knows something. Somebody knows who the shooter is — they need to come forward to help solve the case."

Edwards is asking anyone who knows anything about the shooting to contact him at 641-4201.

There will be a reward offered for information directly related to the arrest of the suspects responsible for the shooting.
