AIB’s community clean-up set Saturday

PRINCEVILLE — With a forecast of weather that is considerably warmer that what has been experienced the past few day, Tarboro’s America in Bloom AIB) committee is hopeful of strong, communitywide participating its in yard sale and cleanup.

Saturday’s effort is the precursor to the arrival of judges from AIB who will assess the community in six areas before submitting a recommendation either for or against the town’s designation as one of the 200 towns and cities named as an “America In Bloom Community” in 2012-2013.

The committee that initiated entry into the competition in early March certainly hopes so and is counting on the help of the residents of the nearly 6,000 households in Tarboro to take part in this effort, which begins Saturday.

“It’s simple; either it’s a town-wide effort or it’s not,” says steering committee chairman Shari Redhage.  “The America In Bloom judges are coming to Tarboro June 18 and 19 to rate the town on six different judging criteria and we need for our citizens to help us make the grade.

“We hope folks will be cranking up their mowers and clippers, and throwing out or selling their would-be treasures to Tarboro’s yard sale ‘regulars,’ Redhage said.

When the America In Bloom judges come to town the week of June 18, they will be rating a number of areas, including overall impression, environmental efforts, heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas and floral displays. The judges will also be looking for examples of community involvement and collaboration, which make Saturday’s town-wide cleanup day a really big factor.

The criteria take in a number of Tarboro’s characteristics in determining a score.  The committee will submit a separate award entry for the work under way in beautifying the new traffic circle at the south entrance to town on Main Street, created following construction of the new Tar River Bridge.  Much of the work on the roundabout has been  visible this week and a 12-foot Chinese Fringe Tree is expected to be planted before the weekend is over. In addition, shrub roses and muhly grass will also be planted. This project has been a collaborative effort of the Edgecombe Master Gardener Volunteers, the County Extension Service, Town of Tarboro and the Department of Transportation.

“We really hope the residents of Tarboro will take ownership in this organized cleanup effort Saturday by making plans to edge their walkways and curbs, remove debris from their yards and take in their trash containers,” urged Redhage.

  • HAPPENING ON THE COMMON

Tarboro’s Town Common was clearly the center of activity in town Saturday,  with cars lining the streets surrounding the common, music that could be heard from blocks away, and a sea of people navigating their way through the vendors’ tables under a canopy of trees. The occasion was the 43rd Annual Happening on the Common.

PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.
