School board to approve workforce reduction

TARBORO — An approval of reduction in workforce is among the items to be addressed when the Edgecombe County Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. today in McIntyre Auditorium at Edgecombe Community College.

A total of 39 positions were targeted for elimination following the approval of the 2012-2013 budget last month. Included in the total were 20 classroom positions — seven teachers and 13 teacher assistants, other jobs eliminated included three guidance assistants, five-and-three-quarter clerical/custodian positions, two attendance counselors, six instructional coaches and one counselor.

Twelve of the positions, including all seven teacher slots and one teacher assistant, were cut through the closure of Roberson Center for Educational Achievement. Other jobs eliminated with Roberson’s closure include an administrator, teacher assistant, custodian, counselor and clerk.

In other items to be discussed:

•  Golden Key recipients will be recognized for their behavior and the fact they served as model students to their classmates and other youth.

• Approval of a revised Alternative Learning Program application

•  Approval of executive summary of the IDEA—Part B (611) Grant and Preschool—Part B (641) Grant for 2012-2013

• Approval of 2012-2013 bell schedule

• Approval of 2012-2013 meal pricing increase

They enjoy working hard during practice for their coach Rickie Dozier and get fulfillment when they compete in events. Friday will be no different for the six girls that are headed to Greensboro to compete in the NCHSAA 2-A state championship meet at North Carolina A&T State University.
