New administrators at several ECPS campuses

TARBORO — Several public schools in Edgecombe County will start the 2012-2013 school year with new administrators. The new school year begins today, with an estimated 6,645 students attending Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS).

One of the new administrators is Jennifer Baggett, principal at C.B. Martin Middle School.

Baggett comes to ECPS from Onslow County Public Schools, where she served as an assistant principal since 2009 and as a teacher prior since 1999.

At the middle school’s open house last Thursday, Baggett said that she would like to change the community’s perception of Martin Middle.

“We want Martin to be the focus of this immediate community again,” said Baggett. “It is a wonderful school. We have a wonderful staff.”

The new administrator thought the “excellent turnout” at Thursday’s open house was a positive way to start the new school year. Another of Baggett’s focuses this school year is “helping students achieve high growth.”

Martin Middle met expected growth but failed to meet all of its Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO’s) for student growth last school year. The school has a roster of approximately 400 students this year.

Baggett received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Winston-Salem State University in 1984. She continued her education by earning a North Carolina License for teaching language arts in grades six to nine in 2002 from East Carolina University. She went on to earn her Master of School Administration at ECU in May 2010.

Martin Middle also has a new assistant principal this year – Chad Moore. Moore recently completed his master of education from North Carolina State University.

Valerie Galberth, who served as assistant principal at Martin Middle last school year, is now the HOPE Program Administrator for Central Services, overseeing the alternative learning program that will be utilized in place of the Roberson Center of Educational Achievement (R-CEA).

Princeville Elementary School will also have a new principal this year – Sandra Joyce. Joyce served as assistant principal at South Edgecombe last year and served as assistant principal of both G.W. Bulluck and Princeville Elementary Schools in the previous year. This is her 27th year with ECPS.

The long-term educator said her goal for the upcoming school year is to raise students’ reading proficiency levels and to challenge students to perform at least on their grade level by using differentiated and individualized instruction. (Princeville Elementary was identified as a “priority school” in the 2012 ABC’s of Public Education accountability report, with only 50 percent of students’ scores at the expected achievement level for their grade).

“We just want our students to show all the knowledge that they have,” said Joyce. She has a degree and background in special education.

“I just know all students can learn. Find a way, and they will learn,” she said. Like Baggett, Joyce was also encouraged by the turnout at Thursday’s open house.

“The parental support here is just amazing,” said Joyce.

Darrell Richardson, who was the principal at R-CEA, will fill the vacant assistant principal position at Tarboro High School.

Richardson is one of several new assignments of assistant principals in ECPS.

Lois Glass will fill the assistant principal vacancy at G.W. Carver Elementary School. Prior to assuming her new position, Glass was a reading teacher at Coker-Wimberly Elementary School as well as an administrative intern.

Diana Denham, previously an eighth grade teacher and administrative intern at C.B. Martin, recently graduated from Elizabeth City State University with her master’s degree in School Administration and was named assistant principal at West Edgecombe Middle School at the Aug. 13 board of education meeting. The administrative position was formerly held by Kristian Herring, who has been moved to the same role at SouthWest Edgecombe High School.

Jarron Parker, who most recently served as one of the assistant principals at SouthWest, has relocated to South Edgecombe Middle School.

The district will also have three new administrative interns as part of the NorthEast Leadership Academy with North Carolina State University. Darren Gemzik at SouthWest Edgecombe High, Amy Pearce at Stocks Elementary and Angela Strother at South Edgecombe Middle will perform their duties as teachers at their schools in addition to learning about the responsibilities of being a school administrator. The Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) is “an innovative school leader preparation model designed to develop 21st Century school leaders for rural, high-need schools in Northeast North Carolina.”

  • fondue-setup.jpg Great fondue

My husband and I love to entertain. We also love fondue. I have 4 or 5 fondue pots. I use them regularly. Some of them I have had for a long time.
Fondue began as a way to use up old, hardened cheese. The original fondue was cheese with wine. You then dipped hardened pieces of bread into the mixture. In America, the 1950's was the height of the fondue craze. However, it appears to be making a comeback.

Somewhat, once they've been cornered/caught
