Moore’s final win ‘I’m thinking 13 is the magic number.’

TARBORO — Edgecombe Early College high school student Shakeal Moore has added another victory to his oratorical winning streak.

“I’m thinking 13 is the magic number,” Moore said with a modest laugh.

This past weekend, Moore, who is sponsored by the Tarboro Optimist Club, won a $2,500 scholarship in the North Carolina East District of Optimist International Male Oratorical contest in Goldsboro. In total, he has competed in 13 competitions and has generated more than $3,000 in scholarship money.

“It helps me a lot,” Moore said as he explained the significance of his participation in the oratorical contests. “When most people go to college, they are not prepared for the workload. I feel better prepared, as though I'm not going to be at such a disadvantage. I already have an idea of what college is like.

“The oratorical contests have allowed me to balance a lot of time. I understand that college is not completely based on academics, but there are a variety of things that you have to be prepared for, like endurance, becoming more independent in your academics and competing against other people who want the same things you want.”

When Moore graduates from the Early College in May 2013, he will receive a high school diploma, an associate’s degree in art and science and will have completed approximately 70 credit hours, which will automatically qualify him as a junior in college.

Currently, he is narrowing down his list of colleges he is considering and said that process has been a bit challenging he said. For now, he said he’d like to stay focused on internship opportunities and ways to get closer to his dream of becoming a corporate attorney and later a judge.
