TARBORO —
The coldest week in Tarboro thus far this winter might end with wintry precipitation.
“The way it looks right now, you all could see an inch or so of snow,” said Shawna Cokley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Raleigh. “With the freezing rain moving in, you could get a coating of ice on top of that.”
The snow is forecast to begin around 11 a.m. Friday and change to freezing rain later in the day. The percentage of snow versus freezing rain that Tarboro receives will all depend on the track of the storm, Cokley stated.
The wintry mix will be falling on cold ground. Tonight’s low temperature is forecast at 18 degrees, and the 10 to 20-mile-per-hour winds will add to the chill in the air.
According to the National Weather Service windchill chart, that combination would equate to a wind chill of between zero and 8 degrees.
“This is the coldest air we’ve seen this season,” Cokley said.
High temperatures for Friday will be in the mid 30’s, with a low of 25 degrees for the night.
“It’s possible you could still have some icy spots on the road Saturday morning,” Cokley said. With temperatures only reaching the upper 30’s on Saturday, the remnants of the precipitation could refreeze on the roads Saturday night.
In the case of hazardous weather conditions, stay off the roads if possible; if not, lower your speed, said Cokley.
“If you start to skid, turn into the skid. Don’t use your brakes,” she said.
The frigid weather that set in Sunday will linger until Monday, when high temperatures will reach the lower 50’s. Tuesday will bring even warmer temperatures, in the mid 60’s. Temperatures are forecast to linger in the 63-to-64 degree range on Wednesday and Thursday before dropping again.

The Town Common and 200-year-old trees providing a canopy over the focal point of Tarboro were the first things that caught the eye of the America in Bloom (AIB) judges when they arrived in town Sunday evening.

ROCKY MOUNT — The Board of Commissioners of Nash Health Care has voted to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to five, pre-selected regional tertiary hospital systems for evaluation of an expanded affiliation relationship.
