Rotary Club completes platinum year

TARBORO — When Tarboro Rotary Club president Dr. Deborah Lamm handed over the gavel to incoming president Chad Hinton last Thursday at the club's year-end assembly, she left him with some big shoes to fill.  Lamm's 12-month tenure as president of the 85-year-old civic club, received the district's highest marks distinguishing the Tarboro Rotary Club as Platinum.

In her comments that reflected the past Rotary year, Dr. Lamm talked about the service aspect of her club and all the Rotary clubs throughout the world community. She detailed many of the club's recent accomplishments and projects in the area of community service.

The creation of a Wetlands Nature Trail was a significant community service environmental project undertaken by the club and was coordinated by Rotarian George Anderson, faculty member at Edgecombe Community College. Phase one, a 1,240 linear foot trail constructed in the wooded southwest boundary of the

college campus, is near completion and will be dedicated in October as part of ECC's 45th anniversary celebration. The project earned Anderson the 2011-2012 Club Service Award for his efforts.

"He pooled funding from five different sources to move toward completion of the first phase of the Wetlands Trail," explained Lamm.  "George managed to move a project forward that he believed in, turning a wetlands area into a meaningful nature trail

that would be a living laboratory for students of all ages and a recreation site for citizens of this community."

Dr. Lamm also noted the club's success in conducting its first "Pill Drop Off Event" collecting expired and unused medications from the residents in a partnership with two local pharmacies, Thorne Drug Company and Bryan Drugs, and the State of North Carolina.

"Over 28,000 prescription pills were kept out of our water supply and properly disposed of," said Lamm. That project was coordinated by Rotarian Dr. Greg Moore.

President Lamm noted other achievements of the year that included financial support of nearly $4,000 for local charities and service organizations; awarding $5,000 in scholarships for the two outstanding seniors at Tarboro High School and the Early College High School; participation in youth literacy projects, youth essay competitions and Rotary's Youth Leadership conference. The Tarboro Rotary Club's projects are funded through a major

annual fundraiser, the annual Golf Ball Drop that this year raised over $10,000 to fund next year's community service projects.

Dr. Lamm concluded, "These combined efforts were recognized in May at the district level with our club receiving the Platinum Award, the highest award possible for club service points."

Two special awards also highlighted the year end meeting as Dr. Lamm presented the 2011-2012 Rotarian of the Year Award to Ronnie Ellis of Conetoe, whom she said exemplifies Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self" in every aspect of his life. "Volunteerism and benevolence are two key words that describe this generous individual."

Past Rotary District Governor Tom Miller presented the Tarboro Rotary Club's Lifetime Achievement Award to Joe Perry, a member of Rotary for 42 years, club secretary for 20 years and named District Rotarian of the Year in 2008.

With gavel in hand, Chad Hinton accepted his new post as president of the Tarboro Rotary Club just two years after coming to Tarboro to join Taylor, Brinson & DeLoatch Attorneys, of which he is now partner of the newly named DeLoatch & Hinton Attorneys, LLC.

Hinton hopes to continue the rich tradition of service to community in the coming year through broadening its membership, and the addition of a blue ribbon commission to perform a community needs study and develop an ongoing service project that will brand the Tarboro club's project for years to come.

  • fondue-setup.jpg Great fondue

My husband and I love to entertain. We also love fondue. I have 4 or 5 fondue pots. I use them regularly. Some of them I have had for a long time.
Fondue began as a way to use up old, hardened cheese. The original fondue was cheese with wine. You then dipped hardened pieces of bread into the mixture. In America, the 1950's was the height of the fondue craze. However, it appears to be making a comeback.
