TARBORO —
Sunday’s afternoon violent thunderstorm turned deadly on Monday when a 46-year-old Fountain man who had planned to be on vacation, was killed when a tree fell on him during storm cleanup at Maccripine Country Club near Pinetops.
David Bottoms, who worked for a landscaping company called in to clean debris from the golf course, died when a huge tree gave way and fell on him.
“The tree broke and chased him to the ground, and he couldn’t outrun it,” Bottoms’ friend, Robin Applen, told WRAL-TV.
Until the storm hit Sunday, Bottoms and his girlfriend, Peggy Bridgers, said the couple had planned to go on vacation Monday, but that he had been called in to work in the storm’s aftermath.
All across the region, clean-up efforts are under way following Sunday’s afternoon thunderstorms, which provided a welcome, but costly, relief to the dangerously hot weather,
The effort started Sunday afternoon, when possible, but got under way in earnest on Monday when crews equipped with chainsaws, bucket loaders and claw clamps started taking down damaged trees, removing lives and picking up piles of debris.
The area along Temperance Hall Road and Highway 43 in that same area appeared to be the hardest hit.
Edgecombe County Emergency Manager Butch Beach said 12 homes in the Temperance Hall area were damaged, including one that was completely destroyed when a tree fell on it. Also, a tree also crashed through the roof and into the middle of a house located along Highway 43.
“It hit this area pretty hard,” Beach said. “With the broad area that it covered, it looks like it was a tornado, but right now we think that it was a straight line wind that produced winds up to 60 or 70 mph. Right now, there is no way we can confirm this. The most important thing is that nobody was hurt.”
While there were no reported funnels clouds, there were a number of large pine trees fell along Temperance Hall Road that appeared to be twisted off instead of blown down.
There were also reports of heavy damage to the county’s tobacco crop, while a promising corn crop looks to have largely escaped damage.
The storms hit in the Temperance Hall area about 2:30 Sunday and slammed into Tarboro about 4 p.m. The majority of electrical service was restored in Tarboro about 9:45 p.m.
Edgecombe Martin Electric Membership Cooperative workers continued efforts to try and get all of their customers back on-line. At about 8 p.m. Monday night, power began being restored in the Pinetops area. By Tuesday morning, the only reported outages were in Beaufort County in the Washington area.

HAPPENING ON THE COMMON
Tarboro’s Town Common was clearly the center of activity in town Saturday, with cars lining the streets surrounding the common, music that could be heard from blocks away, and a sea of people navigating their way through the vendors’ tables under a canopy of trees. The occasion was the 43rd Annual Happening on the Common.

Pinetops 300
PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.

It was 13 years Sunday that a drought was broken in Big Spring, Texas, After that, we ate Mexican for dinner with a gathering of family and friends.
The next day, a Saturday, Stephanie and I joined one another in marriage under a beautiful little gazebo by Comanche Trail Lake, fed by the historic spring from which the community draws its name.
