ECPS moves to shore up curriculum

TARBORO — Dr. Valerie Bridges joined Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) on Nov. 14 as the new Director of Student Support Services and Middle School Curriculum in the educational program services department. Bridges replaces Joe Etheridge, who retired.

Bridges comes to ECPS from Washington County Schools (WCS) where she served as an Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction under current Superintendent John Farrelly. She was most recently the interim superintendent for the county following Farrelly’s move to Edgecombe County.

“She is an excellent educator and a team player. I am looking forward to the support and leadership she will provide our schools in this role,” Farrelly said.

After a career in accounting, Bridges transitioned into the education field in 1998 upon completion of her teaching certification at Saint Augustine’s College. She started her career as a career and technical education teacher in Raleigh before being named the assistant principal at Fuquay-Varina Middle School later that same year. From 2001 to 2005, she also served as the summer academy coordinator, overseeing programs such as Fast Forward Reading, implemented computer-based learning systems such as SuccessMaker and Accelerated Reader, and established curriculum materials for the academy.

In 2005, Bridges assumed the role of principal at Jesse Wharton Elementary School in Greensboro, where she remained until beginning her tenure at Washington County in 2011.

She holds a doctorate in educational research and leadership program evaluation and a masters in school administration from North Carolina State University, along with a masters in business administration from UNC-Wilmington.
