TARBORO —
A 7-year-old Edgecombe County student waiting with three of her siblings to catch the bus for her fourth day of school was struck and killed less than a mile from the school campus at about 6:45 Thursday morning.
Janell Simmons was waiting with her siblings in front of their home in the 12000 block of North Carolina Highway 43 when, for unknown reasons, she ran across the busy highway.
According to reports, she then saw an approaching school bus (not hers) and was hit while attempting to re-cross the roadway.
Simmons was struck by a 2002 pickup driven by Eddie Suggs of Rocky Mount. The force of the impact threw Simmons’ body approximately 30 yards.
Simmons was pronounced dead at Nash General Hospital at approximately 7:30 a.m.
State Police Sgt. D. P. Wainwright said Suggs was driving approximately 45 miles per hour in a 55 zone and that he would not be ticketed. Suggs had begun to slow in anticipation of stopping as he approached the oncoming bus.
“It was a terrible accident,” Wainwright said.
Lauren Edmondson, a spokesperson for the Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS), said Simmons was a first grade student at G. W. Bulluck Elementary School. Edmondson said she had three siblings who also attended Bulluck and one at West Edgecombe Middle School.
Edmondson said both Supt. John Farrelly and principal Paula Flythe joined the family at the hospital, and then returned to Bulluck. ECPS deployed a crisis team that included counselors, social workers and psychologists to the school to inform teachers about the incident, provide counseling and how they should handle any questions or reactions from students.
A ConnectEd call was sent to out to the school community, along with a letter to Bulluck and West parents to not only notify the parents of the situation, but to also prepare them for helping students deal with the grieving process.
In addition to the state police, the Edgecombe County Rescue Squad, Edgecombe County Fire Department and Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call at 6:58 a.m.
