Drug search yields over 73 grams of marijuana

TARBORO — Acting on an early morning tip, Tarboro Police Cpl. Rick Mann obtained and executed a search warrant on a residence at 505 Edmondson Ave., where they found more than 73 grams of marijuana.

After using a battering ram to break in the door, officers discovered two people — 26-year-old Corey Council, 510 Ridgewood Road, Princeville, and 35-year-old Tonya Hyman, in bed inside the residence and ordered them to get out of bed and get dressed.

When Council stood up, marijuana fell from his body cavity.

As officers conducted their search they found a total of 73.8 grams of marijuana in the bedroom.

Officers seized eight cell phones, a set of digital scales, $38 in cash, a mason jar with $2.76 in change and sandwich bags to package the marijuana.  Officers also found bags that had contained marijuana inside the garbage container placed at the street.

Both suspects were charged with possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, maintain a dwelling to store controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $195,000 secured bond.

Council is on probation for selling schedule VI narcotics. He was convicted in October 2009 and given 24 months' supervised probation. He was scheduled to be released from probation in October.

In a separate incident Wednesday, Tarboro police received a report that a suspect was selling marijuana in front a residence at 1613 St. Andrew St. The caller told police that there were three other people with the suspect and they were smoking marijuana.

When officers arrived they observed several suspects outside the residence and smelled a strong odor of marijuana.

Officers searched 22-year old Jamarcus Lavar Sellers, 205 Shirley St., and found six clear plastic bags that contained six grams of marijuana. Police also searched 21-year old Marcus Lamont Johnson, 822 Dunbar Woods Road and found two clear plastic bags that contained less then a gram of marijuana and a partially burnt marijuana cigarette.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence and a search revealed small amounts of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The owner of the residence, 21-year old Kenyatta Deshawn Lewis, was charged with having the items inside her residence. She was charged with simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was written a citation and released.

Officers charged Johnson with simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also written a citation and released.

Officers charged Sellers with possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.

Johnson has prior convictions for breaking and entering and misdemeanor breaking and entering for which he served six months in prison. He also has a conviction for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Johnson has charges pending on him for carrying a concealed gun, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and another drug charges for possession of marijuana.

Sellers has prior convictions for resisting an officer, larceny from a person and common law robbery and is currently on probation from a conviction in South Carolina for assault and possession of schedule VI. He was convicted in 2011 on both charges.
