ECPS may seal cap on over-the-counter meds

TARBORO — Sick students without a doctor’s note might not be able to get over-the-counter medication from the school nurse.

On Monday night, the Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) board will hear a report on the revised policy on medication administration. If approved, the revised policy would require students to have a doctor’s note granting the school nurse permission to administer any type of medication, including over-the-counter medications. The current policy requires a doctor’s note for prescription medications only.

School health program coordinator Heather Campbell said the policy would align system policies with districts in Nash and Pitt counties.

“It’s pretty much the standard now,” Campbell said. She said she does not anticipate the change will make a “huge impact” on students, but would protect the system and students from “misadministration” of medications.  She expressed concerns about being asked by parents to administer medications such as aspirin to their child, when the drug manufacturer recommends not giving it to children under age 18.

In the 2011-2012 school year, school nurses administered 310 long-term (prescription) medications to students and 74 non-emergency (over-the-counter) medications to students, Campbell said. There were about 7,000 students enrolled in the district.

Board chair Ann Kent expressed her approval of the recommended policy change.

“I don’t want our teachers and our nurses put in a bad situation by making decisions about the health of our students,” she said.

During last Monday’s work session, a question was raised about students running a fever and in need of medication during the day. Campbell said school policy calls for parents to keep their child home from school if running a high fever. Students developing a high fever during the school day should be picked up by a parent.

They enjoy working hard during practice for their coach Rickie Dozier and get fulfillment when they compete in events. Friday will be no different for the six girls that are headed to Greensboro to compete in the NCHSAA 2-A state championship meet at North Carolina A&T State University. They will compete in three relay events and the long jump.
