TARBORO —
“Timeless” is the word Jo Ann Josey used to describe the music of the World War II era.
“It never goes out of cycle. People always recycle those songs,” Josey said. “It was more romantic, more fun and you could dance better to it.”
Josey, who holds the title of Miss Tarboro 1969, will bring her vocal talents to a Sept. 15 musical at Edgecombe Community College (ECC) – “Musical Memories of World War II.” Josey said she looks forward to participating in a show that honors veterans.
“It’s letting them know that we haven’t forgotten,” she said. “You feel like if it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t have the freedom we have today.”
Josey plans to sing her No. 1 requested song, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and some Vera Lynn songs, including “Blue Birds Over the White Cliffs of Dover.”
“It’s great music,” said Ken Lautzenheiser, spokesperson for the Edgecombe County Veterans’ Museum. The World War II musical is a fundraiser for the veterans’ museum.
The evening will begin with a performance of “Hooked on Swing Dancing,” featuring Trish Bradshaw from Studio B in Wilson. Later, while Katy Lewis plays 1940’s tunes on the piano, audience members will have the opportunity to “sing-along, like they used to do in the music hall,” Lautzenheiser pointed out.
Kay Hindsley, the wife of a retired Army officer, looks forward to singing in the World War II musical with her daughter, Rae Anne Riggs.
“This is what I love to do. Anything that’s patriotic, I’m there,” said Hindsley. She has sung at a number of veterans’ events with The Three Generations, comprised of her, her daughter and her granddaughter Chelsie Riggs. Among the songs audience members can expect to hear from Hindsley and her daughter at the 1940’s musical are “Chattanooga Choo-Choo,” “Sentimental Journey,” and “Side by Side.”
Hindsley wants to bring back memories for World War II veterans with authentic music and scenes from that era; she plans to “sing for the troops” in front of a cast of characters resembling wounded soldiers in a hospital. Hindsley said the idea of the hospital scene is to emulate the style of Jane Froman, a World War II vocalist who traveled to Army hospitals to sing for the troops, even after being in a debilitating plane crash.
Hindsley and Riggs won’t be the only mother-daughter team performing at the musical.
Tonja Musick and her dance troupe from Pinetops will entertain the audience with a “Yankee Doodle Dandy” dance routine, while Musick’s daughter Anna Claire will tap dance to “Tea for Two.”
The Sept. 15 musical is dedicated to the memory of Edith Bourne, a longtime friend of the veterans’ museum and late wife of Joel Bourne, who died on July 12. The show will begin at 7 p.m. in ECC’s McIntyre Auditorium. Tickets are available for $10 in advance at the veterans’ museum or at the door the night of the musical. The veterans’ museum is at 106 Church St. in Tarboro. It is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will also be open from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday followingthe flag-raising ceremony on the Common.

My 13 years have been lucky
It was 13 years Sunday that a drought was broken in Big Spring, Texas, After that, we ate Mexican for dinner with a gathering of family and friends.
The next day, a Saturday, Stephanie and I joined one another in marriage under a beautiful little gazebo by Comanche Trail Lake, fed by the historic spring from which the community draws its name.

Great fondue
My husband and I love to entertain. We also love fondue. I have 4 or 5 fondue pots. I use them regularly. Some of them I have had for a long time.
Fondue began as a way to use up old, hardened cheese. The original fondue was cheese with wine. You then dipped hardened pieces of bread into the mixture. In America, the 1950's was the height of the fondue craze. However, it appears to be making a comeback. - Budget Friendly Deliciousness
