TARBORO —
John D. Farrelly, superintendent in Washington County the past three years and in Alleghaney County the nine before that, was unanimously chosen as the new superintendent of the Edgecombe County Schools Wednesday night.
Farrelly’s four-year contract is effective July 1. Terms were not disclosed.
Farrely, his wife Rena, and their 3-month-old son Jack were introduced to a boardroom filled mainly with educators after the board quicky moved in and out of a special session in less than six minutes.
“I’m excited and thrilled,” Farrelly said. “I really want to thank the board for their diligence in this search.”
He said that 10 minutes into his first interview he knew he wanted the job.
“I knew then that if this board would have me, this is where I wanted to be, because they are truly concerned with the welfare and education of the students.”
Farrelly fills a position that became vacant last fall when superintendent Dr. Wayne Talley resigned for health reasons last September 30 after barely more than a year on the job. In the meantime, interim superintendent Dr. Del Burns has filled the position.
Farrelly told the audience that he had been in education for 20 years, having taught in K-12 in addition to serving as both an assistant principal and principal.
“I see lots of similarities (between Washington and Edgecombe schools),” he said. “It (Washington) is a district that is also in transition.”
He said he wanted to impress of the community that he and his family wanted to be part of the community.
“I want to be very visible,” he said. “I want to be involved in a civic club and I want to join a church.”
He told school employees present, “I have high expectations of my staff and I look forward to our working together and being successful.”

After December, Morris will be absent. The 71-year-old — who says he's not a politician — recently announced that he will not seek re-election. - 'A moment of remembrance'

My 13 years have been lucky
It was 13 years Sunday that a drought was broken in Big Spring, Texas, After that, we ate Mexican for dinner with a gathering of family and friends.
The next day, a Saturday, Stephanie and I joined one another in marriage under a beautiful little gazebo by Comanche Trail Lake, fed by the historic spring from which the community draws its name.

Great fondue
My husband and I love to entertain. We also love fondue. I have 4 or 5 fondue pots. I use them regularly. Some of them I have had for a long time.
Fondue began as a way to use up old, hardened cheese. The original fondue was cheese with wine. You then dipped hardened pieces of bread into the mixture. In America, the 1950's was the height of the fondue craze. However, it appears to be making a comeback. - Budget Friendly Deliciousness
