Commissioners grant tax exemptions for two properties

TARBORO — Christmas may have came early in the tune of more than $1.5 million for the Pitt County Medical Health Management, Inc. when the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners approved exemptions for two of its properties in the county at its Monday meeting.

The board unanimously voted to exempt the property for Vidant Women's Center on Main Street in Tarboro and the newly constructed Vidant Family Center in Pinetops. Both health facilities are listed as charitable hospitals. According to a state statue, charitable hospitals are exempted from real and personal taxes.

A team of about eight representatives from PCMH Management, Inc. attended the meeting and appeared prepared to argue its case.

PCMH Management purchased Vidant Women's Center last year.

Before the purchase, the previous owners were assessed taxes on the property, said Cindy Coker Edgecombe County tax assessor. The tax value on the property is $894,629.

The tax value for Vidant Family Center is $714,073 for one parcel and $132,000 for a second.

Vidant Family Center is a new facility constructed last year. The medical center was located in Macclesfield for several years, where it was exempt from taxes.

In another matter, the board unanimously voted to oppose the closing of the Youth Development Center (YDC) located on the Edgecombe County side of Rocky Mount.

The Justice and Public Safety of the N.C. House of Representative made the proposal to close the operation.

The facility is used to rehabilitate juvenile offenders who are committed for serious crimes or have a history of crimes.

County manager Lorenzo Carmon said the facility is less than five years old and employs about 65 people.

Carmon said Rocky Mount has also taken a stance against closing YDC.

In other matters the board:

• Approved selling 53 Remington shotguns declared surplus by the sheriff's department. The shotguns will be sold for $125 each during a private sale. The board did not discuss the date, nor the terms of the sale.

Carmon said a notice will be published in advance of the sale.

• Approved a resolution supporting the passage of quarter-cent local sales tax. A referendum will be placed on the November election ballot.

Two suspects arrested on 36 charges; third issued citation
After executing a search warrant Thursday on a residence at 500 W. Johnston St. in Tarboro, police officers arrested two suspects for possessing a small amount of marijuana and issued a third suspect a citation for possessing a glass pipe to smoke the drugs.
After the marijuana was found, officers notified two of the three suspects that they also had additional warrants on them from the department's "Spring Fling" drug campaign where they had sold marijuana to undercover officers.

Pinetops 300
PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.

BELVOIR — Mrs. Mattie Ruth Bullock, 81, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013. The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson.
Mrs. Bullock, a native of Wilson County and a lifelong resident of Pitt County, was a graduate of Belvoir-Falkland High School. She was engaged in farming with her husband until 1989 and was a charter member of Belvoir Free Will Baptist Church.
