ECPS board to elect officers

TARBORO — The Edgecombe County Board of Education will elect its board officers for 2012-2013 at its 6:30 p.m. Monday meeting.  Ann Kent, who represents District 5, is the current board chair, while Evelyn Shaw Wilson, representing District 1, is the current vice-chair. Monday’s meeting will be the first for Edgecombe County Schools’ new superintendent, John Farrelly.

The board will review information regarding fees for microwave and refrigerator use for teachers at Monday’s meeting. Because of a $2.2 million cut in this year’s budget, teachers will no longer have access to microwaves and refrigerators in their classrooms free of charge. The board has the option of voting on a measure that would give teachers the opportunity to pay a small annual fee ($30-$50) to retain microwave/refrigerator access in their classrooms.

The recommendation up for board approval is the removal of all microwaves and refrigerators in individual classrooms because of the additional burden that the collection of fees and monitoring of appliances in classrooms would place upon school administrators. Teachers would retain access to microwaves and refrigerators in the teachers’ lounge free of charge.

Other items up for the board’s review at its monthly business meeting are as follows:

•New state accountability model 2012-2013

•Procedures for bus routes and stops

•An update on implementation of new common core and essentials standards

•Boys and Girls Club of Nash/ Edgecombe Counties.

At Monday’s meeting, the board will vote on renewing contracts for the 2012-2013 school year with the following service providers:

•Edgecombe County Health Department, for three school nurses;

•Careworks, Inc., for speech and occupational therapy services;

•Doctors Hearing Care, for hearing screening for regular education students and hearing screening training for school nurses.

•Renewal of the Exceptional Children’s Program contracts.

Prior to voting on the action items, the board will hear a report from the policy committee on service animals. The report states that the school superintendent will establish any necessary administrative regulations for the use of service animals on school property, in accordance with federal and state laws permitting the use of service animals by individuals with disabilities.  

The board will also recognize school attendance competition winners for 2011-2012 at its meeting. The board meets in the Administration Building Board Room, 412 Pearl St., Tarboro.

  • 14-Under softball tryout

    The Tarboro Parks and Recreation Department and Edgecombe County Girls Softball League will be having tryouts for 14-under girls fast-pitch softball Wednesday, May 29 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Farmington Park in Rocky Mount. The is located at 319 Wellington Dr. There will also be a tryout Thursday, May 30 at Indian Lake Sports Complex on field 1 in Tarboro from 6 - 7:30 p.m. There is a $10 fee for Tarboro residents and a $35 fee for non-residents.     It was 13 years Sunday that a drought was broken in Big Spring, Texas, After that, we ate Mexican for dinner with a gathering of family and friends.
    The next day, a Saturday, Stephanie and I joined one another in marriage under a beautiful little gazebo by Comanche Trail Lake, fed by the historic spring from which the community draws its name.

    My husband and I love to entertain. We also love fondue. I have 4 or 5 fondue pots. I use them regularly. Some of them I have had for a long time.
    Fondue began as a way to use up old, hardened cheese. The original fondue was cheese with wine. You then dipped hardened pieces of bread into the mixture. In America, the 1950's was the height of the fondue craze. However, it appears to be making a comeback.

    The Edgecombe Garden Club met May 1 for their noon luncheon at the Fountains of the Albemarle. After President Pauline Nicolosi greeted everyone, Sandra Joyner, Devotion Chairman, read “Torch” which was about our tongues torching good or evil.
    Hostess Barbara Getzug described her specially designed flower arrangement of mock orange, snowball, purple columbine, and many varieties of roses. President Pauline, Hostesses Gloria Wall and Louise Fleming did the table arrangements.  They contained wiegelia, azalea, ivy, mock orange, and ligustrum.
