Republican SOS candidate stumps in town

TARBORO — As an early campaign move, the Republican candidate for North Carolina Secretary of State, Ed Goodwin, stumped in Tarboro Thursday at Edgecombe County's Republican Party meeting at Abrams Barbecue.

Goodwin, 59, stopped in Tarboro on his way to his Edenton home after a business session in Raleigh. The Chowan County resident received the Republican nod last Tuesday during the Primary runoff and will face incumbent Elaine Marshall in November.

“The east was solid for me,” Goodwin said. “That shows that we can get together behind someone and I hope that carries over to the election in November.

"I’m humbled by the fact that I’m a farm boy from Eastern North Carolina. People say it cannot be done. That’s the worst thing you can do to tell a country boy, he can’t do something. I don’t have a big name, I don’t have a lot of money behind. But what my daddy always told me was with a good name and hard work in this United States, you can get anything that you work for. “

Goodwin is a lifelong family farmer and small businessman and said he hopes to use his lifetime experiences with farming and business ownership to elevate North Carolina when compared to its neighboring states.

“We have to improve the business climate in our state,” he said. “We’ve lost the competitive edge to our neighboring states. They are beating us in all business recruitment.  They have a competitive edge on us that they should not have. We need to find out why and we need to fix it to level the playing field.”

Goodwin earned a BS at East Carolina University. He served in the Air Force and as a member of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service special agent. As a member of the Chowan County Commission, where he began serving in 2008, he helped lead the county from bankruptcy to a 19 percent fund balance in just three years.

“I’m just a regular man that feels this is my calling,” he said about running for secretary of state. “I feel strongly about it.”

  • Six Tarboro girls to compete in track finals

    Motivation is a big part of the Tarboro Viking girl's track team's success this season. They enjoy working hard during practice for their coach Rickie Dozier and get fulfillment when they compete in events. Friday will be no different for the six girls that are headed to Greensboro to compete in the NCHSAA 2-A state championship meet at North Carolina A&T State University. They will compete in three relay events and the long jump.
