At tonight’s meeting, the Edgecombe County Board of Education will vote on school improvement plans for the year.
At each school in the district, an improvement team collaborated to create a plan and voted on that plan. Each team was comprised of parents, the school principal, and representatives of other school staff (assistant principals, instructional personnel, instructional support personnel, and teacher assistants). The plans are based on the following goals in the district’s strategic plan, created at a Leadership Academy in August:
Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) will produce globally competitive students.
Leadership will guide innovation in ECPS.
ECPS students will be healthy and responsible.
ECPS will be led by 21st century professionals.
ECPS will be governed by 21st century systems.
The board approved the strategic plan at its Sept. 10 meeting. The state board of education’s new “vision of public education in North Carolina” is in alignment with the district’s new strategic plan and vision statements, according to ECPS Supt. John Farrelly. The state BOE announced the new vision on Thursday.
“I am pleased to see the shared vision of the North Carolina State Board of Education. The vision statement speaks to the heart of our mission as educators, which is to provide a high quality education to all students in a rapidly changing world,” said Farrelly. “In addition, the statement also demonstrates a commitment to the power of community, commitment and cooperation among all stakeholders.”
Other action items up for board approval at Monday’s meeting are a budget amendment for the current year, a contract between the board and the Edgecombe County Health Department for a school health program, and a $110,000 contract between the board and ProActive Therapy to provide physical therapy for the exceptional children program.
An item for information at the meeting is a $5,000 grant from the North Carolina Arts Council’s Grassroots Arts Program for the annual “Artsplosion” program showcasing students in the visual arts, choral arts and band.
The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the board room, 412 Pearl St.
