Julia Gray Hooks of Raleigh and Steven Michael Shuster of Charleston, West Virginia were married at 5 o’clock in the afternoon on May 9, 2009 at St. Thomas Church in Bath. The Reverend Dr. Christopher Edmonston of Tarboro officiated. A reception and dance at the Washington Civic Center, given by the bride’s parents, followed the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Blair Creech Carlton of Raleigh and Mr. Ellis Wright Hooks of Tarboro. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius R. Creech of Tarboro and the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Thel Hooks of Smithfield.
Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. William Lindsay Turner, III of Raleigh and Mr. J. Michael Shuster of Belle Mead, New Jersey. The groom is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. Shuster of Columbia, Maryland, Mrs. Elsie Koch and the late Mr. Milton Paul Koch of Annapolis, Maryland, and Mrs. Marjorie Turner and the late Dr. W.L. Turner, Jr., of Raleigh.
Readers were Anna Vaughn Creech and Rachael Gordon Creech, cousins of the bride. Ceremony greeters were Hanna Lichtner Compton, cousin of the groom, and Courtney McDaniel Farfour. The wedding was directed by Lindy Creech, aunt of the bride, and Emily Richardson Creech, cousin of the bride.
The bride was escorted and given in marriage by her father. Matron of honor was Shawn Thranhardt Hooks, sister-in-law of the bride, of Atlanta. Bridal attendants were Jennifer Habeeb Bell, Sydnor Williams Greene, Sarah Tucker Moore, Courtney Leigh Shaw, Hillary Baker Thomas, and Ramsay Williams Younger, all of Raleigh.
Nathan Garrett Carter of Denver was the groom’s best man. Groomsmen were Matthew Shuster, brother of the groom, of Raleigh, William L. Turner, IV, brother of the groom, of Raleigh, Ellis Wright Hooks, Jr., brother of the bride, of Atlanta, Robert Avery Hall of Greenville, Charles O’Brien Jones of Raleigh and David Abraham Singer of Wilmington.
The bride is a graduate of UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing. She was presented at the Terpsichorean Club’s 1996 Debutante Ball in Raleigh.
The groom is a graduate of Appalachian State University and is an assistant coach at the University of Charleston, West Virginia.
Following a trip to Ocracoke Island, the couple will reside in Charleston, West Virginia.

May 8 – Boating With the Boys, groomsmen’s outing and lunch hosted by the groom’s parents.
May 8 – An after-rehearsal dinner given by the groom’s parents at The Estuariam on the Washington waterfront.
May 8 – A cocktail buffet supper for out-of-town guests given by Mr. and Mrs. John Jenkins of Tarboro and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Chuman at Cool Point in Bath.
