Greg Bottoms of Tarboro bested twenty-nine other anglers in the annual TASS (Tarboro Association of Saltwater Sportsman) Toys For Tots Speckled Trout Tournament with a citation size Speckled Trout that tipped the scales at 5.58 pounds. The 25.5-inch fish bit a MirrOlure MR-17 Electric Chicken. Bottoms caught the top prize winning trout, while in his boat fishing with Rick Goines, this past Thursday at Dawson Creek, between Minnesott Beach and Oriental, at Janeiro in Pamlico County.
The 30 participating fishermen basically had ideal weather conditions during the 2-week tournament, as most participants caught good numbers of trout in the NC Coastal areas. Some boats reported 30, 40, and 50 fish days.
Over 45 toys were collected and donated to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots program. Assisting Toys For Tots coordinator David Sannes, of Sims, was Larry Hill from Nashville, and Wally Darling, of Rocky Mount, all USMC-Retired.
Darling stated that this year there are more children on the lists for Toys For Tots, yet contributions of toys are down. He said a Frequently Asked Question is, “Where do these toys go?” The answer is that the toys are distributed in the county in which they were collected.
Sponsors for this year’s tournament are: Opticom Communications, Inc. of Garner, Ribeyes/Jersey Mikes of Tarboro, Allen Roberson Plumbing of Elm City, Pizza Inn of Tarboro, and Roberson & Dupree Shoe Store, Tarboro.
Tournament Chairman and TASS President, David Mears, said, “Everyone caught trout, and had a great time. Speckled Trout is a fun fish to catch, and good to eat. Feedback from fisherman and sponsors were all positive. All around, another good tournament!”
