The Tarboro 250th Anniversary Committee and Edgecombe County Memorial Library are sponsoring a Children's Poetry Contest.
The contest is open to children between the ages of 5 and 10 who are residents of Edgecombe County. There will be no more than one entry per child, and all entries must be the child's original work.
Information about the contest has been e-mailed to all the elementary schools in Edgecombe County, said Farrar Martin of the celebration committee.
The winner will be announced on Friday, March 19. He or she will receive $50 and be invited to read the poem at a commemorative tree planting ceremony on Saturday, March 27. The winner's poem will be published in The Daily Southerner.
The theme of the poem must be the Town of Tarboro's 250th Anniversary. All entries must be typewritten and cannot exceed more than 15 lines in length. Creativity is encouraged. The writers may approach the material any way they like, as they meet the thematic requirement.
All entries must be submitted to Edgecombe County Memorial Library by Friday, March 12. Entries can be mailed in, or dropped off by hand. The library is at 909 Main St. The library's mailing address is:

All entries must be hard copies. Electronic submissions will not be accepted. Each entry should have the child's name, age, mailing address and telephone number typed in the upper right hand corner. This information will not be available to the judges, who will not know any of the writers' names until after a winner has been selected
Spelling counts. If a writer has intentionally misspelled words in the poem for an artistic effect, he or she should make a note of it at the bottom of their entry.
