Forty-two days after being tagged the, "Best Choir in America," the award winning Salvation & Deliverance Choir of Tarboro is bringing its show home.
At 7 p.m. on Dec. 9, at Keihin Auditorium on the campus of Edgecombe Community College in Tarboro, the Salvation and Deliverance Choir will present, "How Sweet the Tiding" concert featuring David and Tamela Mann. The show is expected to last two hours.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. VIP tickets are $35 in advance only. Tickets can be purchased from brownpapertickets.com, Phillip's Printing Co. in Tarboro, New Fashions in Rocky Mount, Kuttin Up in Wilson, The Light Christian Bookstore in Greenville and Gospel King Records & Tapes in Raleigh.
"We considered doing the show in Raleigh, Greenville and even Rocky Mount," said Tarboro native and Salvation & Deliverance Choir director, Kristian Herring. "But then we thought, 'There's no place like home. My goal is to bring notoriety to our hometown. There’s lots of talent around here."
Salvation & Deliverance is set to give its hometown audience a replica of the act they performed on Oct. 28 in Los Angeles where they won, "Best Gospel Choir" in America at the Verizon "How Sweet The Sound" national choir competition. They will also perform Christmas Carols.
The audience will certainly get its money’s worth with the addition of the Manns — stars of Tyler Perry's stage play, film and sitcom, "Meet the Browns." David Mann, who portrays "Mr. Brown," is the hilarious patriarch of the family while Tamela plays his daughter, "Cora."
In Tarboro, Tamela is expected to woe the audience with her tantalizing vocals through gospel songs. Herring said he is not sure what role "Mr. Brown" will play. He did say, "The show will have lots of surprises."
Herring is living up to his promise of showcasing his choir in its hometown. After winning the How Sweet the Sound competition, "The gratitude has been overwhelming," he said. "There has been a public cry to see what we did at "How Sweet The Sound." The public want to see us. We owe it to them. This is a must see show for everybody."
Proceeds from the concert will sponsor food for families during the Christmas holidays.
Salvation & Deliverance Church Choir originated in 1979 when Herring and his brother Jeremy were young aspiring singers. After they graduated from Tarboro High School, their choir began making a mark in gospel choir entertainment by competing in competitions all over America. Today their winnings have topped more than $100,000. The Tarboro choir’s latest winning for "Best Gospel Choir in America" was $25,000 purse and invitations to perform at the Stellar Awards and the 2012 Super Bowl.

NCWRC schedules September Outdoors-Woman program events
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will offer two special outdoor skills sessions for women in September through its Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program. (BOW) Registration is open to women ages 18 and older, on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a fee to cover costs of materials and accommodations. Partial scholarships are available.

‘Sound of Music’ opens tonight in Keihin
The Tar Rivers Players final production of the season, The Sound of Music, opens tonight at 8 in Keihin Auditorium. In all, the 27-member cast will present a total of six performances in the directorial debut of James Guy.
Performances will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 22-23 and June 29-30, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 and July 1. -

Former Tarboro resident to be featured at Greenville gallery

It is, he says, the place where his father, Dr. George C. Hemingway, shared his love of the outdoors with him and where so many of his values were established.
