TCO 5k annual race succesful again; more than 130 runners participated

SCOTLAND NECK — “It was jovial and wonderful.”

Those were the words that Rev. Christopher Edmondston, the pastor of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church in Tarboro, used to describe the third annual Movin’ For the Community Outreach 5K Race Saturday.

Approximately 140 runners including three-year participant Clarence Bauer, 86, of Tarboro, attended the adult event and about 40 children ages 9 and under participated in the 1/4 mile fun run. The event was sponsored by Howard Memorial

“It was a tremendous turnout and a great opportunity to meet neighbors, introduce new folks to Tarboro, support Tarboro Community Outreach, and to highlight Tarboro’s 250th birthday,” said Edmondston. “Each year it continues to get better and better.  Our volunteers, sponsors and the town of Tarboro have been wonderful.”

Richard Fergueson of Virginia was the overall winner of the 3.1 mile race, clocking in at 19:33. Brandon Smith of Tarboro finished second and Michael Peter of South Carolina finished third at 21:23.

Kevin Rawls was the first place finisher (25:19) among the Tarboro Firefighter/Police Departments. Averie Sorey of Scotland Neck won the kids run. Bauer, the oldest runner in the group, finished with a time of 1:03:38.

This year the organizers added a team award which went to the group that had the most participants. Stocks Elementary School earned first place with 20 participants and Eastern Star Baptist Church came in second place with 10 runners.

“I think the team from Stocks Elementary was incredible,” Edmondston said. “The job they did to get teachers and staff involved was wonderful. The team from Eastern Star Baptist was terrific too. I think they had a trainer and they got in shape before the race and they all finished strong. It was really great to watch the teams gather and run the race together.

“A third impressive feat was Trey Lancaster winning in the youngest division with a time that was not that far off the winner. And then Pat Petruzziello who finished second among women last year and trained hard this year and finished first.”

The proceeds from the race will go to TCO. TCO operates a 26-man homeless shelter and provides more than 350 meals a week for the needy. TCO also operates a food pantry and offers furniture and clothing for the needy.

Howard Memorial has been one of the county’s front runners in assisting the shelter since it was created 28 years ago.

“I believe that it is critical for every person and every church in our community to support ministries of food for the hungry and shelter for the homeless,” Edmondston said. “The morality of a society is not based solely upon the appropriateness of belief – it is also based on the capacity for  compassion and for its willingness to care for the too easily forgotten. If Tarboro did not have a food ministry for the hungry or a shelter for the cold, then the very soul of our community would be compromised. We should all support Sister Mary Ann and the grace-filled work she does.”
