Warriors boys, girls continue to roll

The North Edgecombe Warriors took care of business by whipping Kipp Pride 70-48 Friday night in Leggett. Montezl Harrell led the Warriors with 23 points, eight rebounds and eight block shots. The super sophomore shot 73 percent from the field.

The Warriors, (13-3 overall, 7-1 conference) led 35-20 at halftime. After a slow third quarter North scored 25 points in the fourth.

Eleven our of the Warriors 13 players scored in the game. Kadeem Alexander scored 15 points for the Warriors.

North's game against Northampton East Saturday was postponed due to bad weather. They will play Northampton-West tonight at home and on Tuesday night they will host Weldon. Weldon is currently in first place in the Tar Roanoke Conference and the only conference team that the Warriors have fallen to. If the Warriors beat the Chargers, it could set up a first place tie in the conference.

Lady Warriors 46-Lady Panthers 37

In the girls games Shaunika Johnson led the Warriors with 16 points as North defeated the Panthers 46-37. Senior Alysia Harvey also had an all-star type performance scoring 12 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Lady Warriors (11-5, 7-1) are also tied for first place in the conference with Northhampton-East.

Including tonight's game against Northampton-West, the Warriors have three more regular season games left on their schedule. Gates County, who is currently in second place, and Weldon who is at the cellar of the conference.

The Northampton-East game has not been rescheduled as of press time. That game could decide the conference championship if both teams win their next two games.

The tournament was held at the ECU Student Recreation Center and is one of the area’s largest martial arts events. It is open to all martial arts styles and systems. This year, more than 75 martial artists competed for medals.

    PINETOPS – The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars honored three distinguished women Monday night during the annual athletics banquet. One inductee was an athlete and the other two spent more than 20 plus years coaching for SouthWest.
    All three inductees were very dedicated to the Cougars athletic program and felt very honored to be inducted into the SouthWest Hall of Fame.

Things didn't work out the way Tarboro and first year head coach Justin Smith had planned. They continued to struggle at the plate and ended their season on a 12 inning streak without a hit.

    Coming into the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs the Tarboro Lady Vikings were given a No. 2 seed in the East bracket and were looking to make a run in the playoffs. The Franklinton Lady Rams had something to say about that Thursday when the two teams faced off at Indian Lake Sports Complex. The Rams defeated Tarboro 4-1, which puts an end to the Vikings remarkable season under first year head coach Leshaun Jenkins.

Long finished in fourth place at the Eastern Regionals last week, which earned him a spot in the NCHSAA 2-A individual state championships this weekend in Cary at the Cary Tennis Center. He is carrying a 23-5 record into the championships.
