South Edgecombe falls 9-6 to AFG after break down in seventh

TARBORO — PINETOPS – Trailing by four runs in the in the bottom of the fifth inning, South Edgecombe battled back to score four runs and tie the game at 5-5. In the seventh inning, South Edgecombe broke down defensively and AFG scored four runs to put the game away and win 9-6 in seven innings.

The loss sends South Edgecombe to the losers bracket in the 10 under District 5 Cal Ripken All-Star tournament.

"I think we played a great game," South Edgecombe head coach Jeremy Fleming said. "After I fixed a few little attitudes we hung in there and battled back. It was just a great game and I couldn't ask anything else from my guys. Both teams played great ball and hats off to the other team."

Going into the top of the fourth inning the game was tied 1-1. AFG's Jacob Bryan led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a pass ball. Luke James then hit a single to give AFG runners at second and third. Joe Comegys then laid down a bunt and loaded the bases. On the next pitch the ball got past South Edgecombe's catcher Britt Varnell, but he hustled back to the plate and tagged James out who was trying to score on the pass ball. Landen Brown then hit a ground ball that got by Jacob Fleming at first base and AFG scored two runs. Two pitches later to the next batter, Brown scored on a wild pitch to give AFG a 5-1 lead.

The South Edgecombe players didn't hold their heads down and continued to battle back. In the fifth inning they answered their coaches challenge when he told them not to leave anything on the field and to give it all they had.

With one out in the inning, Lars Gonzalez drew a walk. Then Franklin Keel struck out. With two outs in the inning, South Edgecombe put a rally together. Ethan Gay drew a walk, then Varnell hit a single to load the bases. Gabe Green then got a base hit to the left side of the infield and the shortstop bobbled the ball which allowed two runs to score to make the score 5-3. Varnell then scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 5-4. Braxton Pittman then got a base hit to score Green to tie the game at 5-5.

"I asked the guys not to leave anything on the field and they responded and we came back," Fleming said. "They battled to the end and I couldn't ask for anything more from them."

After neither team scored in the sixth, the game was forced to go to extra innings.

In the seventh inning, the flood gates opened up and South Edgecombe broke down defensively allowing four runs to score to give AFG a 9-5 lead.

Trailing by four runs, Gay led off the bottom of the seventh inning for South Edgecombe and beat out a bunt. He advanced to second and third on two consecutive wild pitches. Two pitches later, Gay scored on another wild pitch. Hunter Bass and Pittman then both drew back-to-back walks, but Fleming grounded out to first base to end the threat.

South Edgecombe now faces Winterville tonight at 8 p.m. in the losers bracket after Winterville was defeated 6-5 by Southern Pitt on Thursday.

"We have to bounce back against Winterville and play the whole game," Fleming said. "We have a tough team to play, but we can play with anyone if we play our game.

The first part of the session talked about safety and fighting on the court. After voting, the board decided to revise Rule 10-4-5.

Before the rule was revised, head coaches could only enter the court if beckoned by an official.
