TARBORO —
All three Edgecombe County football teams made the playoffs this year. The North Edgecombe Warriors will be at home during the first round, while the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars will travel throughout the playoffs.
The Cougars, they received a No. 13 overall seed in the 2-AA East bracket and will travel to play the No. 6 seed East Duplin. The Cougars are 5-5 this season and are coming off an impressive win against the Greene Central Rams two weeks ago when the Cougars defeated them 52-6.
With the seed the Cougars got, they will be on the road throughout the playoffs.
If they win their first round game, they will play the winner of No. 5 seed Bunn and No. 15 seed North Brunswick.
This is head coach Raymond Cobb's last season as a head coach. He has coached in the county 25 years and has made the playoffs every year. He has won two state titles while coaching at North Edgecombe.
Last year, the Cougars were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round when they were defeated by the Kinston Vikings 26-6.
Cobb is hoping since he returned the majority of his team from last year, they will have experience in the playoffs and will be able to win the battle against East Duplin.
East Duplin has been knocked out of the playoffs two consecutive years by the Tarboro Vikings. SouthWest may be able to make it two Edgecombe County teams that have eliminated them in three straight years.
For the Cougars to be able to advance in the playoffs, they are going to have to play their style of football and control the ball and the clock.
The Warriors will play a well-known opponent in the first round when they host No. 11 seed Weldon Chargers. The Warriors received the No. 9 seed in the Mideast 1-A bracket. They defeated the Chargers 14-8 three weeks ago which gave them the head to head advantage in the playoffs over Weldon.
When the brackets originally came out, the state had the Warriors traveling to play at Weldon.
If the Warriors win their first round game, then they will hit the road the remainder of the playoffs. Their second round game will be against the winner of No. 5 seed North Duplin and No. 15 seed Princeton.
Last year, the Warriors made it to the third round of the playoffs when they were defeated by Jones 22-12. The Warriors may be able to get redemption this year if they both make it to the fourth round, because Jones is at the bottom of the Warriors bracket.
The Warriors are coming off of a bye week and have taken the last week to work on defense and other phases of their game. They have had a week to rest and recover from all injuries and will get back to work today and prepare for a team that they are very familiar with in hopes of advancing to the second round of the playoffs.
