NCHSAA football playoff projected brackets released

TARBORO — The North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2012 football playoff projection brackets have been released by the state. These projections don't mean this is who the three Edgecombe County teams will play in the first round of the playoffs, but most of the time the projections are correct.

The Tarboro Vikings are projected to be a No. 1 through 3 seed depending on the outcome of the final week of the season. Tarboro along with Northside Jacksonville and Edenton Holmes are all three still undefeated going into the last week of the regular season.

The two undefeated teams in the 2-A rankings besides Tarboro are teams the Vikings had to defeat last year in route to their third straight state championship.

If Tarboro gets the first seed in the 2-A East bracket, they will play at home throughout the playoffs until the state championship game. The first seeded team will play Louisburg. If Tarboro gets the two seed then they will host Croatan and if they get the three seed they will host First Flight from Kill Devils Hill.

Tarboro is still the No. 1 ranked team in the state Associated Press poll going into the final week of the season. They are also fifth in the latest power rankings poll that is released each week by the NCHSAA.

In the 2-AA projected East bracket, the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars are projected to get an eight seed. If the bracket holds up, they will host the first two rounds of the playoffs this year vying they win when they host Swansboro during the first round.

SouthWest finished their regular season last week with a very impressive 52-6 victory over the Greene Central Rams. The Cougars finished the season 5-5 and were 4-2 in Eastern Plains Conference action with their only two conference losses coming to North Pitt and Tarboro.

When the brackets are released in the 2-AA, if everything stands as projected right now, if the Cougars can win the first round, they will host the second round as well and play the winner of the No. 11 seed versus the No. 13 or 14 seed. Right now, the projection is the No. 11 seed will be Topsail and they will host either Bertie or Kinston.

The North Pitt Panthers are also in the projected bracket with the Cougars. The Panthers are the No. 6 seed in the East.

For the North Edgecombe Warriors, they are projected to be a No. 11 seed in the Mideast 1-A bracket. As projected right now, the Warriors will travel to play No. 9 seeded Union High School. Union has a 6-4 record going into the last week of the season.

The Warriors are coming off of a tough 43-26 loss to Gates County in the Warriors Tar-Roanoke Conference season finale. The Warriors finished the year with a 4-4 overall record and are 2-3 in the conference.

The Warriors' struggles have been scoring touchdowns this season. They haven't produced points like teams of the past.

First year head coach Keith Parisher has given his coaching staff high praise this year, because he has missed two weeks of practice due to illness and his staff took over and prepared his team for games. They prepared the team as well as Parisher could expect.

He has guided a young team this year to playoffs in hopes of them catching fire and blasting through the playoff bracket with a couple of wins.

They enjoy working hard during practice for their coach Rickie Dozier and get fulfillment when they compete in events. Friday will be no different for the six girls that are headed to Greensboro to compete in the NCHSAA 2-A state championship meet at North Carolina A&T State University. They will compete in three relay events and the long jump.

    Camden Grant and her boyfriend Ricky Davis, Jr. caught a 10 pound carp at a state wildlife pond Wednesday morning off of Highway 33 just outside of Tarboro. Grant said she caught the fish on a piece of shrimp around 10:30 a.m.

    CARRBORO – After defeating the No. 1 seed in the playoffs Friday, the Tarboro Vikings forgot one thing, they had to hit the ball again Tuesday against the Carrboro Jaguars or their season would be over.
    Tarboro failed to be productive at the plate and were eliminated from the NCHSAA 2-A playoffs after losing 8-0 in the second round. Tarboro never gave in after getting down early, but they just couldn't catch a break offensively and get anything going after trailing by five runs after the second inning.

  • Cougars finish 7th in state golf match

    The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars went through the regionals and won by four strokes. They just couldn't get it going in the state golf championships Monday or Tuesday at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines. The Cougars finished seventh as a team after shooting 658 over the two day period.

    BUNN – The Tarboro Vikings brought their "A" game and some lively bats with them Friday night when they defeated the Bunn Wildcats 7-5 in the first round of the 2-A NCHSAA state baseball playoffs. The last time the Vikings won a playoff game it was at the same location five years ago.

    The Tarboro Vikings have made a coaching change in boy's basketball. They hired Reggie Bess as the new Vikings skipper April 26. Bess is a former Viking basketball star who played for Tarboro in 1995-96. He was part of a team that went to the Eastern Regional finals in 95.

  • Glen-Sasser.jpg Tarboro native inducted into Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame

    Tarboro native and Tarboro High graduate Martin "Glenn" Sasser was inducted into The Greater Wilimington Sports Hall of Fame Sunday.
    Sasser was named to the All-Conference and All-State teams during his high school career. He was also selected to play in the Shrine Bowl game in 1960 and then played in the East-West game in 1961.

  • 16 under softball tryouts

    The Tarboro Parks and Recreation Department and Edgecombe County Girls Softball League will be holding tryouts for 16-under girls fast-pitch softball. The tryouts will takes place Monday and wednesday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Indian Lake Sports Complex on field three.

    WENDELL – After beating teams handily all season, the Tarboro Lady Vikings had the rolls reversed against them Wednesday in the first round of the 2-A NCHSAA state playoffs. The Corinth Holders Lady Pirates controlled the ball the entire match and had a fast paced offense that seemed to be unstoppable. They knocked the Vikings out of the playoffs by beating them 9-0 in only 43 minutes of action.

    The East Coast Celtics 15-under AAU basketball team went undefeated in USBA Spring Shootout tournament in Durham April 5-7. The Celtics went 5-0 and this was the third tournament they won. They play May 17-19 in Fayetteville. The Celtics are a combination of players from Tarboro, Rocky Mount and Wilson. They will have a car wash in June in Tarboro and location is to be determined.
