TARBORO —
WILSON – Kyle Norville (1-2) was chased in the sixth inning here Saturday as
the Tarboro native took a tough, 12-4 loss in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against Shippensburg (Pa.) State. The Bulldogs won the nightcap, 16-5.
After Barton took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener, the two teams swapped the lead over the next two frames.
Shippensburg went up 2-1 in the third inning after a two-run double by Jimmy Spanos, but a three-run outburst by Barton staked Norville to 4-2 lead after the fourth inning.
Norville, who had been named both Carolinas Conference and NCAA Division II pitcher of the week after tossing a two-hit shutout against perennial power Kutztown (Pa.) State back on Feb. 3, opened the sixth by issuing a walk to Pat Kregeloh. That was followed by a single by Tyler Basso and a sacrifice bunt by Jimmy Miller.
With Kregeloh and Basso in scoring position at second and third, Steve Sulcoski doubled to drive in both runs and tie the game at 4-4. Then, with Sulcoski at second, Norville failed to get strike calls on a pair of close pitches and wound up walking Ben Miller.
Barton Coach Joshua Simmons had seen enough and pulled Norville in favor of Christian Oliver.
Oliver opened with a wild pitch to advanced both runners into scoring position and a sacrifice fly by Eric Herman plated Kregeloh, putting the Raiders up 5-4.
Shippensburg kept the rally alive long enough to add five more runs with two outs –chasing Oliver and a second Bulldog reliever in the process. An RBI-single by Cody Kulp, a two-run double by Simon Beloff and a two-run homer by Kregeloh built SU’s 10-4 lead after six.
The Raiders went on to add two runs in the eighth to cap the scoring.
In the nightcap, Barton scored seven runs in the first three innings and added six more in the fifth to record a decisive victory in the series finale.
Shippensburg opened the second game with a three-run outburst in the first, sparked by a Culp home run, but it was all Barton after that.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the first, then took the lead for keeps with three runs in the second. Barton added two runs in the third, six in the fifth and three in the sixth.
The Bulldogs improved to 3-6 with the win and play host to Wingate at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Wingate dropped a doubleheader to Tusculum on Saturday to fall to 7-3 on the season.
