TARBORO —
Going into the second week of the season tonight, two of the Edgecombe County football teams started off like their coaches had intended and that was to win their opening game. Tarboro defeated Nash Central 42-26 and North Edgecombe defeated South Creek 18-14.
The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars lost a nail bitter when they gave up a late touchdown pass in the fourth quarter with just over a minute left in the game to fall 28-24 to Southern Nash.
The Tarboro Vikings did it with their offense, because their defense faltered in second half and gave up 20 points to let the Nash Central Bulldogs stay in the game, until senior fullback Travonne Marshall hit it big with a big 78 yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to put the game away after the Bulldogs had cut the lead to eight points.
Last week, Tarboro had three players to rush for over a 100 yards,
Quarterback Aaron Moore rushed for 136 yards, Marshall had 131 yards and Roberson had 108 yards in the game.
Vikings head coach Jeff Craddock thought his offense did a good job the entire game.
This week when Tarboro host Washington, Craddock's defense will have to step up, because the Pam Pack's quarterback is an athletic player and can get to the outside and pick up big yards.
"We have to be ready to play," Craddock said. "Washington looks at their schedule each year and uses our game to determine where they are at before they get to their conference schedule."
Craddock is hoping his Vikings come out like a blaze of fire and start where they left of last week offensively.
When it comes to defense he just wants his squad to get better and continue to work hard everyday so when conference time comes they will be able to compete.
Last week the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars played a great second half, but didn't play well the first half according to their head coach Raymond Cobb.
Southern Nash pushed the Cougars lineman around during the first half and were able to take advantage of that and at halftime Cobb said he made some adjustments and the second half was totally different for the Cougars except for the last minute of the game when the Firebirds connected for a 43 yard TD pass to win the game.
This week Cobb is hoping for a little different outcome when they travel to play against county rival the North Edgecombe Warriors.
Cobb is hoping his team learned something from last Friday when they lost. He has talked to his team all week about their loss and the things that they could've done differently to make the out come different. This week he is hoping his team plays a complete game and not just a good half of football.
"Our goal is to be good in the first quarter and play a complete game through all four quarters," Cobb said. "We need to play inspired football from the get go."
Cobb hopes come game time his team is ready to play against the Warriors.
"We have to be ready," Cobb said. "We will have to be physical the entire game. I just hope our approach is like it was in the second half last week.
Cobb sai dhe was glad that Warriors head coach Keith Parisher was able to get the head position at the school this year, because he has worked hard as a coach for 28 years at the school. He is looking forward to coaching against one of his former assistants while he was head coach at North Edgecombe.
For the Warriors this week, this will not only be a game against a county rivalry, because two friends will be competing against each other.
Parisher is hoping his team comes out and plays hard. He hasn't been at practice the whole week, because he has been under the weather and hopes maybe he can pace the sidelines tonight against the Cougars.
Parisher just wants his kids to continue to compete against their opponents each week and continue to get better.
Last week, Parisher's Warriors didn't give up against South Creek and were able to hang on and win.
"We fought back and played hard last week," Parisher said. "If we can continue to do that we will be alright come conference time."
Last year, the Cougars blanked the Warriors 56-0 in the last week of the season, because the game had been postponed three different times before they ever played.

Pinetops 300
PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.
