TARBORO —
PINETOPS – SouthWest Edgecombe Lady Cougars freshman pitcher Kaylan Page was in a groove Friday when she took the mound against the Tarboro Lady Vikings in an Edgecombe County rivalry and Eastern Plains Conference matchup. Page only allowed the Vikings to get four hits as she struck out seven to earn her fifth win of the season. The Cougars defeated the Vikings 10-0 in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
"Kaylan did a very good job once again for us," SouthWest head coach Jeff Gould said. "Kaylan is carrying the team right now with her pitching performances that she is giving us. Hopefully this will last through the break so we can get everyone healthy again. She has a tremendous amount of poise for a freshman."
Tarboro's pitcher Sara Whitehurst was starting her second game on the mound since injuring her wrist over two weeks ago against Rocky Mount. Whitehurst struggled in the first inning. She hasn't allowed a lot of walks during her high school career for the Vikings but she did Friday. Whitehurst walked 10 batters in which five of them came in the first inning where she hit three consecutive batters.
"This was the first game back for Sara that we pitched her instead of just throwing for location," Tarboro head coach Riley Hurlde said. "It took her a little longer to get warmed up then usual. She needed a few more pitchers to get the wrist loose. Some of that is my fault because I haven't been letting her throw in between games. We want to heal the wrist."
SouthWest came ready to play and was looking to stay on track and hold on to second place in the conference. They scored nine runs in the first inning when
Taylor Webb led off with a walk. With one out in the inning, Kaylan Page was then walked and her sister Kelsey Page followed with a single that drove in Webb. Chelsea Owens then followed with double off the fence that scored both Pages. Collene Stallings then followed with a double which put Cougars runners on second and third. Jennifer Britt was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Meghan Murray then was hit by a pitch as well which allowed Owens to score. Montana York was then hit by a pitch which allowed Stallings to score. With two outs in the inning, Dawson Gould then hit a single to right field and the ball got by the right fielder which allowed Gould to come around the bases and score. That gave the Cougars a commanding 9-0.
"We came out in the first inning and played really well and hit it well," Gould said. "We were able to score those nine runs in the first inning which is good to do in any ball game because we weren't taking Tarboro lightly in anyway."
Kaylan Page dominated while she was pitching. Vikings senior Kailyn Abrams had two of Tarboro's four hits off of Page in the game. They came in first inning when she hit a double off of the left field fence and then she hit a single in the fourth inning. Charity Best and Whitehurst had the only other two hits for the Vikings.
"That is part of softball – some days you knock the cover off the ball and some days you don't," Hurdle said. "I tried to tell the girls we couldn't get all the runs back with one swing so we needed to scratch a little at the time. Their pitcher did a good job throwing the ball and was able to keep us off the bases."
The Cougars were looking to put the game away in the fifth inning by the mercy rule, because Whitehurst had managed to keep SouthWest in check after the rough first inning she had. The Cougars didn't have a runner get pass second base in the second through the fourth inning.
With one out in the fifth inning, York was walked. Webb then hit a ground ball to second which was miss played and allowed the Cougars to have runners on first and third. The Vikings then intentionally walked Gould to load the bases. Kaylan Page was then walked which allowed York to score the tenth run of the game.
"I will give my girls credit for the performance they gave today," Gould said. "I have a lot of respect for the Tarboro program and they didn't give up."

Pinetops 300
PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.
