Vikings netters blank Panthers


The Tarboro Vikings netters got off on a good Eastern Plain Conference note Tuesday by blanking conference foe North Pitt 9-0 in Tarboro.

The Vikings gave up only two sets in the single matches and five sets in the doubles.

Returning five out of six of their starters last season, Vikings coach, Billy Strother is expecting “great things” from his 13 player squad this season.

“I am excited about this season,” Strother said. “We have a very experienced group and we hope to get better everyday.”

Senior Will Leland, who was the No. 1 seed last season, earned the top spot again this year. junior Armando Gonzales, junior Tyler Bennett and junior Tony Ramierz rounds out the top four seeds for the Vikings. All four of them are intricate pieces for the Vikings’ soccer team also. Senior Christian Jarrell is holding down the fifth seed and first time player junior Trent Hollman is the sixth seed.

Last season the Vikings finish 15-5 and advanced to the first round of the state playoffs where they were ousted 5-4 by Southern Vance. Tarboro also placed second in the EPC behind Greene Central.

The Vikings will attempt to avenge their first loss of the season against No. 6 Southern Nash at 4 p.m. today in Tarboro.
