Webb named Player of the Year

ALL-COUNTY GOLF

TARBORO — Playing golf isn't just a hobby for Nathan Webb, it is a passion that he has the desire to the be the best that he can. Webb is on the golf course at the Maccripine Country Club almost seven days a week working on his golf game to improve his skills.

The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougar sophomore showed exactly what putting in the hard work can do for someone this season for the Cougars in golf. He was awarded the Eastern Plains Conference Player of the Year and finished the season with a 75.4 average which was tops on the Cougars team.

Webb is the 2012 Daily Southerner All-County Player of the Year in golf.

"Nathan is very, very talented in golf," SouthWest head coach Raymond Cobb said. "He is an athlete and really came into his own last summer and started shooting well. I knew he was going to be even better when the season rolled around and he was."

Webb was the medalist in at least nine of the Cougars 20 matches that they played in this season.

It wasn't easy for Webb to go out and perform at the top of his game though, because he was dealing with personal issue that most kids don't have to go through in life. He was put in the hospital a few days before the Cougars were headed to play a practice round in the Campbell Invitational. While in the hospital, Webb was diagnosed with Diabetes. While in the hospital, Webb had to learn how to give himself shots for the disease. He stayed in the hospital for several days and then was released on a Saturday. The day he was released, he went to play participate in the practice round of the invitational and played all 18 holes.

The following week, Webb went back to Campbell with his teammates and shot 70 and was the runner-up medalist in the invitational. The tournament consisted of 100 of the top golfers in North Carolina.

"To see Nathan handle his diabetes like he did all season was impressive," Cobb said. "He was some mature about the situation and is just a good example of a young person who was shocked to find out he had a disease. But the way he handle it and continued to play great golf is just incredible. He has just been so brave and amazing."

Webb is talented at the game of golf. He does everything well while he is on the golf course. He drives the ball well from the tee and has a good stroke with the irons. He is also top notch with the putter.

"Nathan has a chance to go big in golf if he keeps improving" Cobb said. "He has a passion for the game."

Webb has good work ethics when it comes to improving his game. He is always working on his game when he has the time. If he continues to work hard to improve each day, he will only get better and better.

Webb has a great opportunity to accomplish a goal that most high school players dream of. Being he has already been named the conference medalist, he could do it again two more times during his junior and senior season.

"Nathan has the ability to compete on the state level for an individual championship next year," Cobb said. "If he keeps working like he is now, then he will just better and his game will continue to improve."

Webb is a leader by example. He works hard at his game and is a very coachable player. He likes to encourage his teammates as well. Webb also has a great personality and is alway smiling while he is on the golf course playing golf.

The entire Cougars golf team was selected to be on the All-County golf team as well for their amazing season that they had.

The Cougars won the conference title, Eastern Regionals and went into Pinehurst for the state championships with an undefeated record. They struggled during the championships and finished in sixth place in the NCHSAA 2-A golf championships.

"Overall it was an amazing season for this good group of kids,' Cobb said. "We just don't know what happened to us when we went to Pinehurst, but before that we played great golf."

In head up matches against conference and big 3-A schools, the Cougars put an impressive 55-0 record together. They also won the regionals by 18 strokes and dominated the field. During the season SouthWest had at least three to four golfers to shot in the low 70's.

"These kids are just great friends with one another," Cobb said. "Even when they weren't on the golf course together they were some where else hanging out."

The majority of the team spends seven days a week at the golf course though improving and working on their golf game.
