Jaguar boys, girls claw Cougars in conference action

TARBORO — FARMVILLE –  The SouthWest Cougars played with the Farmville Central Jaguars in the first half, but the Jaguars exploded in the third quarter and put the game away after the Cougars went cold shooting the basketball. The Jaguars defeated the Cougars 71-36 in Eastern Plains Conference action Tuesday in Farmville. This was the second straight game that Cougars were held to under 40 points and their head coach Tom Wooten was not pleased with his teams performance after Tuesday's game.

"I am more disappointed in this loss than I was in the loss Friday against Kinston," said Wooten. "My leaders just were not in the game and just were not focused. I don't know what to say about the last two games."

The Cougars started off slow in the first quarter. They trailed 9-0 with 4:53 left in the first quarter and Wooten took a timeout to calm his team down. SouthWest came out of the timeout and Javin Hinton hit a five foot jumper from the baseline. Hinton also made one of two free-throws and Anthony Coley made a lay up and the Cougars trailed 11-5 after one quarter.

The Cougars came back in the second quarter with a little more intensity and closed the margin to one point after Coley and Hinton made two lay ups Ernest McKinnon hit a jumper just inside the free-throw line. SouthWest took the lead 15-14 with 3:16 left in the first half, when Delonte Dupree hit a three-pointer from the wing. The Jaguars put a 11-4 run together to close out the half behind some sharp shooting from Justin Taylor. He hit two threes to give the Jaguars a boost. They led 25-18 at the half.

"When they took the lead back in second quarter from us, we just folded and put our heads down," said Wooten."We have to get back on track, because we can't be successful if we continue to play like this."

SouthWest committed eight turnovers in the first half and Farmville Central capitalized by scoring 10 points off of the miscues.

"I told my guys at halftime to get back to the basics and run the offense," said Wooten. "I told them we had to look inside and get some easy baskets down low."

The Cougars didn't hear what their coach told them, because they continued to shoot from the outside and they went ice cold. The Jaguars took advantage and opened up the third quarter on a 10-2 run before Wooten called a timeout. The Cougars came out of the timeout and turned the ball over and Jaguar Tommy Williams converted with a lay up. The Jaguars put a 6-0 run together in the next minute and a half and forced Wooten to take another timeout with 3:16 left in the third quarter.

The timeout didn't do much good, because Farmville Central closed the third quarter out on a 9-5 run to lead 50-28 after three quarters.

"We didn't run our offense like we are capable of doing," said Wooten. "We have to start getting the ball back inside to Ernest and Anthony so we can be productive on the offensive end of the floor."

SouthWest was led offensively by Coley who had 10 points and eight rebounds, while McKinnon chipped in eight and grabbed 10 boards and Hinton also chipped in eight and added four assist.

"We have to get better, because things only get tougher for us," said Wooten. "We have some important games coming up and we have to regroup."

Lady Jaguars 53

Lady Cougars 36

The SouthWest Lady Cougars were out and running on the Farmville Central Lady Jaguars Tuesday during the first quarter and a half. With 4:32 left in the second quarter the Lady Cougars led 17-13 and then the officials were forced to stop the game by school officials at Farmville Central due to a fan that had fallen in the bleachers and had to have medical care. From that point on it was all Lady Jaguars and they defeated the Lady Cougars 53-36.

"After the delay we were a different team on the court," said Lady Cougar head coach Sandra Langley. "That gave Farmville Central a chance to regroup and they came back out and took advantage of the break."

The Lady Cougars came out in a box in one defense and shut down Lady Jaguar point guard Aushzanique Pittman the entire game. She scored six points, but her teammates picked up her slack. Destiny Foskey and Vontashia Avent were a thorn in the Lady Cougar's side as they combined for 21 points.

April Poage was the key offensively for the Lady Cougars as she scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Krystal Jenkins also added 11 points.

"April and Krystal really stepped up and played a good game," said Langley. "I just wished some of the others would have stepped up and helped contribute to keep us in the game."

The Lady Jaguars blew the game wide open in the third quarter when they went on a 15-2 run to start quarter. the Lady Cougars could never redeem themselves and catch up to Farmville Central.

The Lady Cougars will play Beddingfield Friday at home. Beddingfield used a full court press the last time the two teams met and caused the Lady Cougars to turn the ball over numerous times.

"We have to work on our press breaking, because Beddingfield is going to press us," said Langley. "We have to get better at handling the basketball, because we struggle when we are being pressured and trapped."
