Tars defeat Farmville 5-3

TARBORO — There was a lot of excitement in the Tarboro Tars Senior Babe Ruth teams dugout Thursday after they defeated Farmville 5-3 Thursday in Coastal Plains League action. The win improves the Tars record to 2-2.

"It was a good team effort," Tars head coach Warren Mitchell said. "We had a couple of bad base running decisions, but we overcame it and fought back and won."

Tarboro has struggled over the past couple of years winning games. The number of players in the program are down due to players going to play legion ball which hurts the Tars with pitching.

"It is always good to get a win," Mitchell said. "Our goal is to be above 500 this year and we are right there at that goal right now with this win. We finished at 500 last season and want to improve that and be above it this year."

Pitching wasn't a problem for Tarboro Thursday though, because Travis Martin and Trey Radford keep the Tars in the game with their performances.

Martin started and gave the team four strong innings of work. After giving up three runs he settled down in the fourth. He also allowed four hits, while striking out one.

Radford relieved Martin and worked the the rest of the game allowing only two hits, one walk and struck out two.

"Travis started for us and had good control and gave us four good innings," Mitchell said. "Trey came in and worked hard as well. He had his curve ball working for him. That pitch through their batters off."

Farmville scored a run in each of the first three innings with two of the runs coming off of errors committed by the Tars infield.

The Tars bounced back in the second inning and scored twice. With the bases loaded, Warren Mitchell, Jr. got a base hit that scored Wesley Hart, then Samuel Flythe singled past the first baseman to score Corey Baker to tie the game at 2-2.

The Tars added three more runs in the fifth. Tyler Harris led off the inning reaching on an error by the Farmville shortstop, then Radford drew a walk. Martin reached base safely after laying down a bunt which allowed Harris to score to score from second. With runners on first and third, Austin Holland hit a deep fly ball to center field which scored Radford to give the Tars a 4-3 lead. Joe Miller then got a base hit and Farmville tried to throw Martin out at third and over threw the third baseman which allowed Martin to score to take a 5-3 lead.

Radford shut down the Farmville hitters in the sixth and seventh innings keeping them off balance with his curve ball to earn the win.

Tarboro will be back in action Monday hosting the Greenville Kiwanis. The game is scheduled to be a double header starting at 6 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.

    PINETOPS – With the threat of rain during the weekend, it put a little damper on the Pinetops 300 Tractor and Truck Pull attendance. Friday night there was a large crowd in attendance, but not the amount it has been the last several years. There was 500 less people in attendance Friday then there was a year ago, but it didn't stop the pullers from slinging mud everywhere. The fans in one section even had a chance to see what it looked like when a belt breaks on a fine tuned machine. During the Mini Modified run, Thomas Coleman, of Stoneville, had a belt break on his KB 526 Pure Hell ride and the belt slung into the crowd. No one was injured.

  • Vikings, Cougars compete in 2-A state meet

    The Tarboro Vikings and SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars had six girls apiece competing in the NCHSAA 2-A state track meet in Greensboro Friday at North Carolina A&T State University.

They enjoy working hard during practice for their coach Rickie Dozier and get fulfillment when they compete in events. Friday will be no different for the six girls that are headed to Greensboro to compete in the NCHSAA 2-A state championship meet at North Carolina A&T State University. They will compete in three relay events and the long jump.

    CARRBORO – After defeating the No. 1 seed in the playoffs Friday, the Tarboro Vikings forgot one thing, they had to hit the ball again Tuesday against the Carrboro Jaguars or their season would be over.
    Tarboro failed to be productive at the plate and were eliminated from the NCHSAA 2-A playoffs after losing 8-0 in the second round. Tarboro never gave in after getting down early, but they just couldn't catch a break offensively and get anything going after trailing by five runs after the second inning.

  • Cougars finish 7th in state golf match

    The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars went through the regionals and won by four strokes. They just couldn't get it going in the state golf championships Monday or Tuesday at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines. The Cougars finished seventh as a team after shooting 658 over the two day period.

    BUNN – The Tarboro Vikings brought their "A" game and some lively bats with them Friday night when they defeated the Bunn Wildcats 7-5 in the first round of the 2-A NCHSAA state baseball playoffs. The last time the Vikings won a playoff game it was at the same location five years ago.

    The Tarboro Vikings have made a coaching change in boy's basketball. They hired Reggie Bess as the new Vikings skipper April 26. Bess is a former Viking basketball star who played for Tarboro in 1995-96. He was part of a team that went to the Eastern Regional finals in 95.

    Tarboro native and Tarboro High graduate Martin "Glenn" Sasser was inducted into The Greater Wilimington Sports Hall of Fame Sunday.
    Sasser was named to the All-Conference and All-State teams during his high school career. He was also selected to play in the Shrine Bowl game in 1960 and then played in the East-West game in 1961.

    The Tarboro Parks and Recreation Department and Edgecombe County Girls Softball League will be holding tryouts for 16-under girls fast-pitch softball. The tryouts will takes place Monday and wednesday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Indian Lake Sports Complex on field three.
