North Pitt shuts out Tarboro 16-0

TARBORO — The Tarboro Lady Vikings struggled Thursday against the North Pitt Lady Panthers in Eastern Plains Conference action. North Pitt pitchers held Tarboro to only one hit in the game which came off the bat of Sarah Edmonds in the third inning. Other then the hit the Vikings only had three other base runners. They never had a runner reach second base.

The Vikings also struggled defensively. They committed eight errors in the game which resulted in eight runs scoring for the Panthers.

The Panthers defeated Tarboro 16-0 in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Sara Whitehurst started for Tarboro on the mound and took the loss. She gave up 16 runs on 16 hits, while walking five and striking out four. Only eight of the runs were earned.

"Sara is getting strong by the game since her injury," Tarboro head coach Riley Hurdle said. "Her velocity has picked up as well. She is throwing the ball harder for us now than she has thrown all year. That in it self is an encouraging sign."

North Pitt had two big innings. They scored eight runs in the third and seven runs in the fifth.

North Pitt blew the game open in the third inning when they sent 12 batters to the plate. They scored eight runs on seven hits, but the Vikings committed four errors in the inning. Caroline James singled with one out in the third. Morgan Whicker followed with a double, then MaKayla Meeks laid down a bunt and reached base safely which loaded the bases. Rachel Rawls then hit a single to center field which scored two runs for the Panthers. Shavon Shaw then flew out to first base for the second out. Courtney Cyrus then hit a triple over the left fielders head which drove in two more runs. Spencer Staton followed with a single to drive in two more runs. Tarboro then committed four costly errors which allowed three more North Pitt runners to score. They led 8-0 after three innings.

"We had a few shaky innings but North Pitt hit the ball good," Hurlde said. "All in all I can see us improving all around which is a positive for us. Everyone is beginning to get back healthy and things are beginning to click for us. They were a good team."

The Panthers scored seven more runs in the fifth. The Vikings committed four more errors in that inning. Shaw hit a double which drove in two runs and two batters later Staton hit a single to score two runs as well.

Tarboro will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Greenville to play in the D.H. Conley Easter tournament at Sara Law Softball Complex. The Vikings are scheduled to play at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. They will also play again on Monday at 11 a.m.

"We are going to focus on the fundamentals in the tournament," Hurdle said. "I just want them to make the routine plays. I want to get these freshman in as many different situations as we can so they will know what to look for as the season goes on. I want them to see the situations at game speed instead of just practice."

The main question remains about Major League Baseball. Why do the same players names continue to appear when it comes to using performance enhancing drugs (PEDs)?
Last year, Commissioner Bud Selig said that they were going to crack down on drug testing, but the fact is how many players have been tested so far through this season?

  • Five rule changes for high school basketball in 2014

During a recent session in April, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee made five rule changes to the game.
The first part of the session talked about safety and fighting on the court. After voting, the board decided to revise Rule 10-4-5.
Beginning in 2014, the revised rule states that head coaches in high school basketball will be allowed to come onto the court in an effort to break up a fight or to keep a situation from escalating into one.
Before the rule was revised, head coaches could only enter the court if beckoned by an official.
