Cougars defeat Bruins 5-2 in rain shortened match

TARBORO — The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars tennis team got back on the winning track Wednesday when they traveled to Wilson to play the Beddingfield Bruins in an Eastern Plains Conference match. The Cougars defeated the Bruins 5-2.

The Cougars won the seven matches that were played. The No. 2 and 3 seeded doubles matches weren't played, because the event had to be stopped due to inclement weather conditions.

SouthWest improves to 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Cougars No. 3 seeded singles player Tyler Killebrew made the difference in the match according to Cougars head coach Joel Elliott. Killebrew was down 4-7 and came back to win the match Damien Parker 11-9 after Killebrew won seven of the last nine games in the set.



Singles

No. 1 seed Alexander Derby defeated Michael Bier 10-4

No. 2 seed Mark McKenzie defeated Mark Knight 10-7

No. 3 seed Tyler Killebrew defeated Damien Parker 11-9

No. 4 seed Michael Parisher defeated Jermell Hinnant 10-4

No. 5 seed Adrian Chavez defeated Noah Estes 10-7

No. 6 seed Oscar Jaimes defeated Tyler Joyner 10-3



Doubles

No. 1 seed Derby, McKenzie defeated Bier, Knight 8-3



The Cougars will not be back in action until after the spring break.
