5K race set for Saturday

Runners.

On your mark.

Get set.

Go.

The Movin' for Community Outreach, 5K run/walk race is set for 9 a.m. Saturday starting in downtown Tarboro to the Town Commons to Forest Acres neighborhood and back.

The inaugural event is directed by 5-time marathoner Kevin Shaffer. The proceeds will benefit the Tarboro Community Outreach, Inc., a non-profit agency which serves needy families and is a shelter for homeless men.

The race is expected to draw several hundred runners.

Awards will be given for the top three male and female, age group male and female and the top town Tarboro Town employee, fire fighter or police officer.

Shaffer, a native of Tarboro chose to work with TCO because of their efforts to fight hunger and homelessness in Edgecombe County. TCO reaches the needy of Tarboro by providing shelter, soup kitchen, a food pantry and clothing to hundreds of families and individual each month

    PINETOPS – The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars honored three distinguished women Monday night during the annual athletics banquet. One inductee was an athlete and the other two spent more than 20 plus years coaching for SouthWest.
    All three inductees were very dedicated to the Cougars athletic program and felt very honored to be inducted into the SouthWest Hall of Fame.

    DEEP RUN – Coming off their final regular season game where they didn't get a hit, the Tarboro Vikings were looking to rebound going into the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A state baseball playoffs. Things didn't work out the way Tarboro and first year head coach Justin Smith had planned. They continued to struggle at the plate and ended their season on a 12 inning streak without a hit.

    Coming into the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs the Tarboro Lady Vikings were given a No. 2 seed in the East bracket and were looking to make a run in the playoffs. The Franklinton Lady Rams had something to say about that Thursday when the two teams faced off at Indian Lake Sports Complex. The Rams defeated Tarboro 4-1, which puts an end to the Vikings remarkable season under first year head coach Leshaun Jenkins.

    Tarboro Vikings junior, Lane Long has been a dominating force on the tennis courts this season. He has risen as one of the top players in the state in high school tennis. Long finished in fourth place at the Eastern Regionals last week, which earned him a spot in the NCHSAA 2-A individual state championships this weekend in Cary at the Cary Tennis Center. He is carrying a 23-5 record into the championships.

  • Tarboro tennis loses 5-4 to Topsail

    The Tarboro Vikings tennis teams season came to an end Tuesday when they were defeated 5-4 by Topsail in the second round of the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs.
    "We dug too deep of a hole for ourselves in singles," Tarboro head coach Billy Strother said. "The effort was outstanding in doubles, but we came up just short. Topsail was the better team."

    The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars golf team carried their perfect record into the Eastern Regionals Monday at Carolina Sands in White Lake looking to leave there undefeated. They did that, shooting 300 as a team. The top three teams in the regionals advanced to Pinehurst to play for the NCHSAA 2-A state championship Monday and Tuesday. The 2-A championship is being played at Long Leaf.
