Teams looking for positive finishes

TARBORO — With the season winding down, all three Edgecombe County football teams are looking to make a run in the final weeks of the season. All three teams are in position to at least make the playoffs right now.

North Edgecombe Warriors

The Warriors they are coming off an impressive 14-8 victory over Weldon. With the win, the Warriors are sitting in fourth place in the conference with a 4-4 overall record and are 2-2 in the Tar-Roanoke Conference.

The Warriors coaching staff pulled together this past week and had four days of positive practices because head coach Keith Parisher was out. Parisher had been hurting for three weeks and found out he needed to have gall bladder surgery. He had the surgery earlier in the week and was on the sideline coaching Friday night.

Parisher and the Warriors had been struggling of late, but have won the last two conference games which has given them an advantage in the conference when it comes to head to head play if they finished tied in the conference with Kipp Pride or Weldon.

If North Edgecombe can defeat Gates County Friday night, then they can secure a playoff spot in the conference and possibly finish the season in third place.

SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars

The Cougars, they had an unusual performance Friday night against the Vikings which forced them to fall out of second place in the conference after Tarboro defeated them 43-22.

In the first half the Cougars had one play that could have kept them in the ball game, but the play didn't work out like head coach Raymond Cobb thought it would. The play changed the complexity of the game and gave Tarboro the momentum the remainder of the first half.

SouthWest has one more game remaining which is Friday night when they host the Greene Central Rams. SouthWest is 4-5 overall and 3-2 in Eastern Plains Conference action. SouthWest is ranked 20th in the power rankings.

Cobb said his team played a heck of a football team Friday night and the lack of execution by his team didn't help out any either. He said Tarboro created most of their havoc throughout the game.

Tarboro Vikings

For the Tarboro Vikings, they are sitting on cruise control right now. No matter what kind of game they play, good or bad they find a way to come out victorious in the end.

Tarboro is sitting a top the Eastern Plains Conference in first place with a 4-0 record and are 8-0 overall right now. If they win out, it will be the second time in three years that they have gone undefeated in the regular season going into the playoffs. That doesn't mean much for the Vikings though, because two years ago when they went undefeated they didn't receive the first seed in the East in the playoffs. This year could possibly be the same because there are several other teams in the East in 2-A that are undefeated as well and Tarboro is sitting at seventh in the power rankings and are No. 1 in the AP poll.

Tarboro is coming off what their head coach Jeff Craddock is calling their best performance of the season when they defeated SouthWest Friday night.

Craddock said his team is good, but not great right now but they are getting better each day.

Craddock and his Vikings will travel the last two weeks of the season, when they go to Farmville Central Friday night then travel to play at Beddingfield against a shaky Bruins team.
