Tarboro High graduate Javon Jenkins, 18, signed his letter or intent Wednesday to play basketball at Louisburg College, a junior college in Louisburg.

"I am really excited about next year," said Jenkins. "I’m already working out and getting ready for next season."

Jenkins, a 6 foot-3 power forward, averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds per game during his senior year at Tarboro High.

“I hope I can become more versatile in my game, become more well-rounded,” said Jenkins. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to attract the attention of a bigger four-year program.”

At Louisburg, a junior college, Jenkins will be eligible to play for only two seasons.

Jenkins, who was looking at a total of three schools, said he chose Louisburg, which is about a 45-minute drive from Tarboro, for several reasons.

“It was closer to home,” said Jenkins. “I really liked the school, the basketball program and I really like the coach there.”

“We are really excited to have him,” said Louisburg College Basketball Head Coach John Meeks. “We are building a solid squad this year.”

Tarboro Basketball Head Coach Leshaun Jenkins, who is also Javon’s uncle, said he thinks Javon will play well for Louisburg.

“It was a good fit,” said Coach Jenkins. “We had a good visit and like the program.

“Hopefully, Lavon will continue to work hard and be able to move on to a four-year program after his two years at Louisburg.

Jenkins is the son of Shabara Jenkins of Rocky Mount. He said that he plans to major in nursing at Louisburg.

“I’m ready to go tomorrow if I could,” said Jenkins. “This is all really exciting.”
