A. EUGENE PARSONS

A. Eugene Parsons, 92, of Tarboro died Friday, July 24, 2009.

Funeral services were held today at Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Wilson officiating. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Candor Cemetery in Candor.

The family received friends Sunday at Carlisle Funeral Home and will receive at other times at 2405 Deanie Ave. in Tarboro.

Chief Parsons moved to Tarboro in 1967 to become fire chief of the Tarboro Fire Department until he retired in 1981. Before coming to Tarboro, he was a member and the chief of Candor Fire Department, chief of the Guilford County Community Fire Department, a member and former president of N. C. State Firemen’s Association and a member of the Lions Club and Woodmen of World.

He was instrumental in starting many programs with the Tarboro Fire

Department and helped form volunteer fire departments in Leggett, the

Lewis community and Heartsease.   

He is survived by his wife, Mary James Parsons; two daughters, Genelle McDonald and her husband Nelson of Cameron, and Phyllis Parsons Freeman of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Sylvia L. Lawson and her husband Bob of LaGrange, Ky.; a stepson, Willie Keel and his wife Olivia of Garner; one sister, Bonna Mae Haywood and her husband Thomas of Norfolk, Va.; four granddaughters and four great-granddaughters
